Citrus (TV) Genres: drama, romance Themes: high school, shoujo-ai, yuri Plot Summary: Fashionable Yuzu imagined the first day at her new school she transferred to after her mother’s remarriage a bit differently; she didn’t know it’d be an ultra-strict and conservative girls’ school. So instead of a sweet high-school romance, she butts heads with the stern student council president Mei – who turns out to be her new step sister. And she has to learn that hate and attraction are often not that far apart. ---------------------------------- Airing today/streaming on Crunchyroll. |

Ya gotta love anime families: "oh hey, the man I married whom you've never met is gone halfway around the world for six months and, by the way, this is the stepsister I've never mentioned before now."
So the stepsisters will soon be scissor-sisters, eh? Well, it's always nice to see a blended family getting along lesbotronically. |

Well I cam in expecting some yuri trash, and indeed it is not so good that romance here is starting with pretty much sexual assault. But Yuzu is a really likable character. I mean, I was the type of guy who was always in to following dress code with uniforms, but the way the show portrayed Yuzu made me actually feel for her when she was getting told off for everything about her dress. Like it actually made me feel invested in the things that Yuzu likes in expressing herself with her gal outfit. Sure she gave an initial impression of being shallow, but she showed way of actually being very friendly and generally a likable character that feels likable for her self assured nature.
I hope it does not get too trashy, I like yuri stuff, and I like our main character. Although warning seem to be it will at least be some trashy. |

Well it is not the most egregious trash in manga and anime history, but don´t expect some heartfelt romance, exploration of disfunctional characters like Kuzu no Honkai or meaningful depiction of homosexuality. The outstanding part of it is that it mostly avoids using stock yuri tropes and instead exchanges them for stock romance melodrama tropes. So unless that change of pace for a yuri sow is something that can get you excited, I actually enjoyed a few chapters due to this at least, or you just like trashy romance melodrama don´t get your hopes for this one up too high, at least I never figured it to be particularily well written or high quality outside of it not being cliché yuri. |

Episode 2
Well Yuzu was pretty cool for straight up publicly revealing what that scumbag teacher was doing. Unfortunate that it had Mei taken away by her stuck up grandfather, and in trying to mean the best it lead to Yuzu getting expelled from something that looked far too personal for him. Hopefully Mei will be able and willing to do something on her end. |

I'm liking the show but one of the things that is bugging me is Yuzu's constant efforts to reach out to Mei and those being rebuffed. Okay, I know she thinks Mei is pretty and she has seen Mei look sad, but, for me, that's not enough to explain why she - a character who has been portrayed as anything but a doormat type - is so keen on making a connection. It's not ringing true to me.

Good point Blood-. There are more kinks in this story. The whole marriage thing was weird. But in the end it's all for one big goal: to make the naughtiest edgiest lesbian anime evahrr. For that, they've created the ultimate edge: stepsisters in luv! And you know, if Yuzu would say no to Mei's advances and ditch the girl (which would be a wise choice from what we've seen of her until now) then... there'd be no show. And Mei can't just be a nice girl in the beginning of the show, then the series would lose its naughty edge.
Well, at least that's what the author seemed to think while writing this... story? Or more like, it feels like a fantasy porn flick without nudity To be honest, I think the sexual abusy scenes are overboard and outdated. However, Yuzu does have a fun personality and I must admit to liking edgy soapy romances. It's like popcorn, cannot stop eating! So I'll continue watching this, even though I don't like that Mei repeatedly assaults Yuzu. Does that make me a bad person? ... Edgy ? No? Ok... |

Episode 4
So much sexual assault in this show, the vice president forced herself onto Mei, I think using her role as long time friend. That is not good and all, but I don't think the show is actually in a bad place, it is actually been pretty good in how so far negative aspects have been removed. The teacher ran away after his acts were thrown out in public, the strict grandfather seems to have had a change of heart in seeing how a girl like Yuzu is not a bad person, and Mei seems to have opened up a bit to having the family situation. Yuzu is also a pretty level headed character. |

So I watched the first episode of Citrus... and scored a bingo on my "Yuri is for straight men" bingo card. Let's see...
All Girls School Sexual Assault [Free Space] Older/Younger Dynamic One Off Friend Who'd You Much Rather Watch the Lead Fall in Love With Than The Dominant Authority Figure What do I win... besides a series that doesn't try to go out of its way to reach new ground let alone break it? It's like Strawberry Panic except... it's mother forcing the girl to an all girls school rather than the aunt? Oh and all the relationships weren't spelled out until their disappointing conclusion. Nope, not here. Mei winning the heart of Yuzu is the foregone conclusion. Yuzu + Harumin, for the win. No, we can't have that. That would be healthy. And here I was hoping for Yuzu's tears for that scene. No, she was lying flat on her back, out of breath and her face was flushed. If I didn't know any better, I'd say she... Oh, we're starting from that point? |

Funny story, Comic Yuri Hime is a female focused publication.

My money is on spoiler[Mei having pushed away Himeko after the fade-out and the latter, manipulative, coming to Yuzu to claim a relationship anyway in a vain attempt to drive her away]. What doesn't make much sense in this scenario is spoiler[Mei being secretive about it--unless the show is trying to push an angle in which Mei feels ashamed at being assaulted]. This would be realistic, but while I'm enjoying this so far, I am highly doubtful that Citrus has the chesticles to explore that.
We'll see. |

So Yuzu finally gets to meet the guy her mother MARRIED but whom she has never set eyes on before. Only in manga/anime. Anyway, should be interesting to see how this shakes out.

I hope he does not turn out to be a problem. The sort that might tear Mei away from her new family.
