It's really hard to write articles about anime you find completely abhorrent but still you want those sweet, sweet clicks from ANN readers who enjoy the anime. |

I think there is a circle of hell in which it's a bunch of meta circle-jerks on other people's meta-circle jerk takes on meta-circlejerk Japanese light novels in which you are forced to read, non-stop, forever. A cynical view on this material is probably not the best approach, and cynicism is something professionals can turn on and off in their professional capacity, right? I mean, where's our herbivore takes here? |

To give a less hostile response, I get the impression that the discussion comes from the assumption that a show being self-aware must necessarily be part of a takedown of the genre. It seriously misreads shows like this and what they're trying to do (Saekano had similar responses). The show is clearly written by and for fans of this stuff, all of whom are 100% aware of how stupid it all is, but love it anyway. So talking about the silly assumptions of the genre is the show's sense of humor, not an attempt at deconstructing anything. ("Wow, the conventions we all know and love are pretty stupid, aren't they?" not "These coventions are bad") To call that a failure because it doesn't reject its own attempt to be enjoyable seems like missing the point, and imposing certain storytelling conventions that just aren't applicable.
At the end of the day, the response is 'ew,' (a totally reasonable response) trying to be framed as 'this show is not working.' It is working, just not in any way you want it to be. |

No? I mean, the whole 'ew, gross' response seems totally fair. The show is definitely a great subject for a column like this, because those reactions can be hilarious. I'm specifically talking about the idea that the show is betraying itself by indulging in the same silliness it jokes about.

It's a surprisingly comfy show with brutal and well-done moments like all of Haruto's suffering. Some parts of it are a bit much for me, like Setsuna accosting Chihiro or Nayu convincing Kaiko, but Imosae's generally an amusing show that evokes a surprising amount of emotion.
Itsuki was a complete to Miyako when they first met, though. I'm amazed she ever spoke to him again. |

At this point the only thing that's keeping me watching this show is curiousity over whether the show will ever show the MC finding out that spoiler[his "stepbrother" is actually his "stepsister."]

As a consumate trashwatcher, I must admit I thoroughly concur with almost everything expressed in this article. This show does have genuinely good moments going for it (I never thought one of my favourite moments this anime season would be an imouto obsessed LN author doing his taxes...) but the sex comedy, Nayu and the illustrator guy in particular, can be a huge deal breaker for some viewers. And as Jake and Micchy observed, there's the issue of the show 'trying to have its cake and eat it too' which can result in tonal dischord (such as episode 1 shifting from almost 20 minutes of absurd gross-out sex jokes to an abrupt serious attempt at romance that doesn't click at all with the previously established scenes) and makes me wish the show would just pick a stance and stick with it. The emotional realism it aims for can feel jarring when it follows the sexual harassment humour and vice versa. When the show was downplaying the sexual harassment gags (or at least limiting it to Nayu and the fantasy sequences) it was much easier for me to enjoy and take in scenes such as Itsuki's creative block. If it wants to be a show about ridiculous fetish fuel then that's fine, just it's a bit awkward having chunks of the script feel as though they belong in a completely different show.
On a dumber note, whilst Itsuki doing his taxes was undeniably the highlight of the show for me, I loved how they went and got so many big name seiyuu for his trash fantasy sequences. (There's just something so beautifully audacious to me about hiring Hikaru Midorikawa and Akira Ishida to do 2-3 lines each as imouto devoted teenage boys in a trashy LN - iirc they also got Yui Horie and Yukana as the imoutos for that one. And Hekiru Shiina I think was credited as the imouto in the shark sequence. Oh right and they had Souichirou Hoshi and Mariko Kouda in that opening sequence, didn't they? Hmm... for the climax can we expect Megumi Hayashibara imouto then?) |

The best things in this show are the beer references. It's so usual to see characters in anime swilling some fizzy lager that having characters drink stouts - and real actual beers (though sadly not imported) to boot, is remarkable and many of the brews they've featured sound interesting.
On top of that, there's the germ of a much better series lurking in here. The bit about being locked up to meet your deadline. The bit where the anime based on the other guy's books turns out to be a big flop - where the show takes itself a bit more seriously and eschews its bad ecchi garbage then you get the feeling it could be so much better. |

I enjoy plenty of trash. Or I like to think I do. But this series generally did not work for me. So yeah, I mostly agree with the opinions in the article on this one.
