It seems like the Yiddish film Mamele would be an interesting comparison, as it deals with a lot of similar themes.

So the big question about this release is whether or not the Blu-Rays are worth getting if you have the original DVD box set. From what Rebecca says in the review, I'm dubious.
I'm also curious about which English casting choices are considered the mismatches. |

I watched this dubbed on Netflix a while back the OP by Ritsuko Okazaki is still one of my favorite opening themes and while aspects of the dub have aged well the over localization being the most glaring. That being said I always though Laura Bailey was well cast as Tooru.

Fruits Basket is the series that got me into anime.
When I was 14 I was in an English class and we had a public speaking task to stand up and talk for 10 about something we were passionate about. One girl, I knew her a bit but I wouldn't really say we were friends, chose to speak about anime and Fruits Basket and she brought in the first volume of the DVD as a prop. It sounded interesting so I asked if I could borrow it and 12 years later she's one of my best friends and I absolutely love anime. Though that said I probably won't buy this release, I've had the original DVD release for years so I don't see any need to collect it again, and from what I've read the DVD's have a better visual quality anyway. One thing about the dub is even though I know it's him I still can't hear Eric Vale in Yuki. |

Oh. Oh! It's been over ten years since I've seen the anime, but that casting miscue really stayed with me. I can't even remember if I viewed the English or Japanese version, so I can't comment as to whether it's one version or the other.
Casual viewers of the anime may not be perturbed by the cast, and that's perfectly fine. Readers who have finished the manga may be caught off guard to hear the full cast. I commend Rebecca for raising the issue without letting the cat out of the bag. |

The thing you're referring to is present in both Japanese and English versions because when the anime was made the manga had not presented us with all the information yet. |

Oh, that. It's the same as the Bunny Drop anime; If it's not part of the show, it never happened. I never understood it anyway... not that I read the manga... or finished the series... Remember the patriarch figure? Well...actually... and on top of that... somehow... Yeah, like Bunny Drop, best not to think about it. |

I think the dub is pretty good, barring the whole issue with spoiler[Akito's real gender], which isn't really any of the actors' fault. I seem to remember some people making a big deal that the English dub didn't give Yuki a female voice actor like the Japanese version did, but I didn't really have a problem with that.

Oh, so that is the matter being referred to? If so, I also take the philosophy that it was done accurately to what was known at the time and so isn't a problem. Besides, I get the impression (I haven't read the manga because I strongly dislike its art quality) that casting that role more accurately - if the secret had been known at the time - would have been a massive spoiler. |

That's a small part of it, but I was also talking about a couple of the main characters. Mostly I just couldn't get behind Jerry Jewell's Kyo - the acting was fine, but I didn't think that the voice quite fit with the character. I'm also a bit ambivalent about Laura Bailey's Tohru and John Burgmeier's Shigure, although I think they both grew on me as the series went on.
As an aside, I really liked giving Yuki a male voice in the dub - I love Aya Hisakawa, but I'm not fond of her Yuki. As far as the rebuying for the blu ray, unless you really want the extras, I'm not sure this is worth it with the video quality. |

Ah, I see. I always saw Jerry Jewel's Kyo as his defining role and he's still "the voice of Kyo" to me when I hear him in any other role. I've heard negative comments elsewhere, too, about Burgmeier's Shigure, but I always loved it; he was probably my favorite vocal performance in the series. Of course, I should also clarify that I watched this through at least twice dubbed before I ever saw it subbed, so that may be influencing my opinions here. |

These are my feelings as well. I thought Jerry Jewel did a fantastic job as Kyo, and I also really liked Tohru, Yuki and Shigure's English voices as well. |

Great, a Blu-Ray version of one of my all-time favorite series! Maybe I should upgrade from the 2002-03 DVD singles that had bitrate starvation problems due to alternate angles being used, among other issues...
While I haven't gone back and rewatched this series in quite some time, finishing the manga doesn't sour my opinion of it. Yes, the loss of the spoiler[hat flashback] subplot was unfortunate, but imo DEEN and Daichi did the best they could with the content that was available in the manga at the time, and managed to provide a product that felt complete without being too obvious of a 650-minute manga commercial. And they accomplished all that with, according to some rumors, an overly-meddlesome manga author breathing down their necks. Even setting the manga's artistic issues aside, it really seemed to go adrift and meander away from its main themes around volumes ~18-20. (spoiler[Was all the time spent on Yuki's student council co-workers really necessary?]) |

Kind of, yeah. It sort of helped expand his character/development and spoiler[introduced the character he'd get together with at the end] Anyway, re this release, the thought of calling takoyaki jelly buns is hilarious. I guess we're lucky Tohru isn't a jelly filled donut. |
