I don't know much about Japanese law but if he never married the woman than how is he being sued for separation? Also considering he divorced his previous wife in 2014 what is the required amount of time for a common law marriage in Japan?

Well...This is an unfortunate turn of events.
Perhaps Mr. Fujishima-san forgot to settle terms with his former fiancé? |

Not to be nitpicky, but it's either Mr. Fujishima or Fujishima-san, not both, as many people here use both English and Japanese honorifics at the same time in a incorrect fashion. |

I'm really confused. A fiancee doesn't have any legal standing as a spouse would as far as I know.

What is so confusing? He hurt her feelings by leaving her for a younger and likely better looking woman so she is suing for mental anguish. I don't think that claim would fly here, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out in a Japanese court.

Well, she was his Fiancé, and not just girlfriend.
That means they were engaged, and a wedding was planned... I think the mangaka married the girl, ALSO because she was pregnant and since she is 20, their relationsship must have started while the girl was still underage... maybe he could have go to jail for this... |

Sounds like the fiance was heartbroken by his arguably sudden separation only to quickly reveal he was having an arguably shotgun wedding. It will be interesting to see this play out.

Age of consent varies from country to country.Hell here in america it varies from state to state. Japan consent ranges from 13 to 18(toyko is 18). |

Forgive my ignorance, but I really don't understand the whole imprisonment thing. Say, a 16 yo girl has an intimate relationship with 25 yo guy, does it mean he is in danger of being jailed? |

In Japan, depending on the prefecture, yes. And possibly in prefectures where age of consent IS 16. I'm not sure about Japan, but even in the U.S., an age gap that large is not honored if the person is more than five years older than the 16 year old. Then, it's still statutory rape. I think we can stop the discussion on statutory rape/prison thing as it doesn't pertain to this case at all. There are no claims by his current wife or anyone else that he engaged in a relationship with a minor. No one has any idea at this point when they met and began a relationship. Regardless of how you feel about the age gap, we're still dealing with two adults and all the speculation so far suggests they met up, she got pregnant, and they got married in a short time span, not that it was a long-running, abuse situation that started when she was a minor. Also the age of consent in Japan is prefecture by prefecture and NOWHERE in the country is it actually legal for an adult to hook up with a 13-year-old despite the federal age technically being that low. It's 18 in all 47 prefectures. (https://www.ageofconsent.net/world/japan) Last edited by ANN_Lynzee on Thu Nov 09, 2017 11:31 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Absolutely? 16 is underage, any sexual relationship with an adult, especially one nine years older, is classified as rape. What part of that is confusing to you? |

Somewhat tangentally related, Fujishima came under fire shortly after he remarried when he worked for Compile Heart's Kurobara Valkyrie (Black Rose Valkyrie in the West, I think?) since, as this work features her new wife as seyuu (and I can add that her performance is abysmal) and he was accused of nepotism/favoritism.

I wonder what usually happens, if the situation was reversed. Do men usually sue former engaged girl friend when they dump them to marry another man ?
