the only thing I say this is missing is those fanservice anime releases (bluray era, iirc) that got the censored-tv version released as blurays in the usa.

Pointing out the flaws of the Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex Blu-ray got you banned form Anchor Bay's Twitter account as well. They still haven't to my knowledge admitted that there was a problem with the release.

The Stand-Alone Complex debacle continues to piss me the hell off. One of my all-time favorite series, a legitimate masterpiece, and yet I can't bring myself to buy that shit-show. At this point I feel like my only hope is if the UK winds up getting a release that manages to be competent.

Holy crap. I was just recently starting to consider upgrading my Stand Alone Complex DVDs to the blu-rays but had no idea about this issue. Thanks for saving me the money!

I've been lucky enough to avoid bad releases myself (unless there was no better option in one case) but I had an ex-friend who was unlucky enough that their Bubblegum Crisis set had a live action martial arts flick on the last DVD instead of the rest of it. that seems like more of a fluke that something widespread tho as I've not really heard of that happening to other people.

Another major reason I usually don't buy independent middle man releases by companies operating from crummy warehouses. Yes buying Aniplex, Ponycan USA, and Japanese releases are expensive, but gives you max satisfaction as a collector, especially in this day and age of streaming. With Sony buying FUNimation, I wonder if it will get better. I mean, how do you screw up a release misspelling a title, and a rescue after distributing what was left from Geneon's stock for that matter? Of course, I'm referring to Tenchi in Toyko.

To this day I still laugh at US Renditions' release of the first Dangaio OVA which has Dangaio's "Psychic Wave" attack subtitled as "Sidekick Wave"! Pretty minor compared to some of the examples provided in the article, but it sticks in my memory!

I've more or less avoided bad releases, but Ghost in the Shell SAC's Blu-ray release pissed me off. I know Anchor Bay isn't well versed in anime aside from mainly GITS but it didn't even have the bare minimum but they had the nerve to charge upwards to $50 a set (could be more). I got rid of my DVD sets in anticipation for this release and I know now that was a mistake.

Anchor Bay's BDs of Stand Alone Complex are outright appalling. Even worse was their attempt to sweep it under the rug by deleting comments and banning people. Nothing has been said about fixing it either. Amazon stopped selling those sets not long after they were released but I still see them at my local Best Buy.
All of Anchor Bay's social media accounts have been abandoned since the beginning of May so something must have happened there at least. I'm waiting on Sentai to finally fix Penguindrum and Colorful too. I'm more surprised that they are still selling those awful BDs of them all these years later, even though they've done new encodes for multiple other titles. |

Uggh, I'm so glad the Aussie Blu-ray release of Penguindrum used a different master. If only there were some way for Siren to release it with a better dub. Oh well, at least Japanese is the default
Speaking of Sentai, some of their releases from 2012 to 2013 were.. well they were bad. Kids on the Slope and K-On! Season 2's first collection both had really muffled Japanese audio on episode 11 and I don't believe they ever fixed it. Inu x Boku SS has an English dub where the ENTIRE AUDIO TRACK is a split second off meaning the words never quite catch up to the lip flaps. AKB0048 had some really weird subtitle errors. And while I understand the reasoning behind getting rid of Katyusha. the Tetris music in Girls und Panzer... oh my god. It's not a flaw in the same sense as the others but I'm still mad. They still put out iffy dubs on the regular but believe me when I say Sentai has come a long way. I lost count of how many mistakes they made during that period. Of course, they were rarely held accountable since Funi and Aniplex are apparently the only two companies in the anime fandom that people are allowed to criticise. Oh yeah, also I love Madman but their DVD release of Mr Osomatsu is literally just a downscaled hardsubbed Crunchyroll rip. I wish I was joking. I really hope they give it a proper release when Viz does one in the US. |

I dodged the bad blu-ray release of GitS:SAC at the last moment. Luckily I was able to pick up the Korean version of the show on blu-ray. It has the dub, which I prefer, and it looks really nice. I don't know if it's still in stock but I purchased it off kimchidvd.com. It is region A.

To think that we will never get another version of Project A-Ko, after the '00 days when CPM thought "Special Edition" meant DVNR'ing the print to within an inch of its life.
(As Animeigo did with their UY TV episodes. To AE, "restoration" also meant pumping up the contrast.) Video and computers were still in their infancy back then, and studios actually trusted their cartoon restorations to DVNR. |
