I feel like this is going to fizzle out and die, honestly. Which is a shame. I was a pretty big fan of the actual OVA that was produced, but not really feeling a LA thing, and feel like Kickstarter is probably not the right direction for them to go at this point.
I really wish Netflix of CR would jump on something like this. It seems like such a perfect fit.

The OVA already couldn't keep up with TV anime that were 10 years older, so I don't know why people would continue to throw money at this failure.

They've got a pilot, they don't need more Kickstarter money. They had one chance to impress, and too many that I've heard from, they didn't. If they want to turn this into a TV show like they said, they will have to do it themselves.

So... just one question. Can anyone tell me why the group that claimed they were going to "save" anime is trying to kick start a live-action version of their IP?

I was a backer and I don't remember them saying they were going to save anime. I think that was the fans of Trigger who said that about its various works not them if I remember correctly. As for the live action im just as confused as everyone else. they told backers they were working with a "sponsor" so to speak to create a Tv series to follow and explain Anthea background. And possible Movie or OVA to complement it. ( Anthea the face of UTD project that only showed up the last min in the OVA) I guess that failed... Despite its flaws, i saw potential in this show aka why I backed it. But sadly my guess like others is this live action will be UTDs final nail in the coffin.

How long has it been since the OVA came out?The original kickstarters promised that they'd try for a movie/TV series eventually didn't it? But instead they're doing these weird unwanted Live Action and music stuff? Isn't a Live Action way more expensive to produce? Why are they going this route? I don't think I ever watched it even but this whole expansion project sounds like a desperate attempt to keep interest on a property that failed to make much impact in spite of all the hype they gave it. And looking at the comments in the Kickstarter campaing page... yikes.

They couldn't have made it sound more generic and unappealing if they tried.
On a completely differnt note, this reminded me of that weird Kickstarter thing that caused a shitstorm like two years ago that had the most laughable PV and a ridiculous sounding concept. The director even threatened to sue a lot of people for "slandering" and then abruptly closed the campaign claiming his father had died, does anyone remember what the name of that project was?
