"continues to hope that this recent arrest and that further efforts against piracy and unauthorized use will serve as a warning."
Surely after all this time and all these different arrests. They should have realized by now that it doesn't work that way...

Leaking is one thing, but making money from leaks it is just asking for trouble.

Scanners may place traceable marks, so if you engage in 'certain' activities make sure the scanner can't be traced back to you either.
Though knowing how they made money from website ads it's pretty clear it was plain old failed online opsec that did them in...

Um you're still admitting to a crime of being involved with this even if it's not the most recent time.

From the article:
Quote: | The police claim that Hottai may have earned up to 305 million yen (about US$2.80 million) from this site over three years. |
Quote: | According to the police, Hottai has accepted the charges, claiming that he launched the website to "earn money for expenses." |
At over US$933,000 per year, this guy has a lot of expenses.

If this was in the USA, the first-sales doctrine being used as fair use would be an interesting defense. Of course, I don't think it could ever fly.

That is what I was thinking. Even if he started out that way, it looks like he no intention of stopping once those expenses were covered.

It might apply if all they were doing was buying copies early, and then reselling those same copies to other people. At that point, the publisher would probably be more upset at the retailer for breaking street date. However, replicating them digitally and putting them online, and making a rather tidy amount of money on top of it would go well beyond anything covered by first-sale.

Wow, I didn't realize you could rack up that much money just from website ads.

It's fine to be against law breaking and scanning, but when you start getting openly antagonistic and talk like people who read them are beneath you, you instantly lose me.
For some people that's the only viable method for them to consume one piece and it's not against the law to talk about spoilers once their out there. I actually think k scans can work great as notes for early discussion and later supplemented in the community by the official release.
I still remember the time they tried to tell ANN to take down an article because it talked about a reveal before the chapter was officially released.

If we are teach our kids that scanlations are theft, then maybe we shouldn't let them enjoy series like "One Piece". After all, pirates are thieves.

Wow, $2.8 million US? That is quite the profit.
I hate to say it, but revealing how much pirates earn from their illegal booty, would likely would encourage more of it.
