Seems like a waste for something that's obviously not going to take off in the US. I seriously doubt the fourth time on American TV will be the charm for One Piece.

Yeah, this is the main reason why I'm skeptical about the project. The high production cost could kill the show before it even gets a chance to air. I know Oda and company are jazzed about it, but the companies and people involved don't give me hope it's going to be smooth sailing, or even successful in the end.

Japanese authors are famous for having a very notable ego, and having an American or western adaptation is a very good way to show it. Unfortunately, they never bother to analyze which persons are working with.

Pfft... "Been a fan for 20 years..."

What a big, fat lie. Still, deep inside of me, I am hoping they could make a feasible adaptation since flopping it would affect One Piece's legacy in the States...

but yeah, I prefer it to be cancelled once and for all.

Why or how? This isn't Game of Thrones where you need photorealistic backdrops so you may as well do some location shoots. In fact, a live action One Piece would be best served being 80 CG. Setting, action, characters... I'd draw the line at clothing personally but maybe you'd have to do mass uniforms or something. Very little should actually "live action" as even the water would be done better these days through CG.

What could be expensive about the show, exactly? These days, it's just the actors; If you want names, you got to buy them.

Yeah, this is just producer prattle for "Notice me!".

Well why not. One piece has broken pretty much every other record so why not break the record for most expensive show made. I always felt like it was a shame one piece never took off in the west like it did nearly everywhere else but I don't think this is what's going to set it off.

Ummm CG isnt really cheap mate. It's actually pretty expensive, hence why most TV shows use it sparingly if they can because it looks noticeably bad/dated. Just look at the ABC Inhumans show which has something close to a movie budget and the CG still looks god awful. In order for a show like once piece which would predominantly rely on special effects to sell its story then yeah, it's already gonna be a pricey venture for the action scenes ALONE. That's not including the various and distinct islands and sets they'll have to make, the various sea creatures they'll have to bring to life without them looking ridiculous, the ships they'll have to construct, then take apart whenever they're no longer needed, the various equipment/make up they'll need for the actors, in addition to the actors they'll have to pay. It's not even on game of thrones level where the majority of the budget goes into paying the actors. In this case they could hire a bunch of no name actors and it might still cost more than game of thrones, simply because the story and set pieces demand it in the budget. So unless they're going for a watered down, less colourful version of the series, the producer isn't really wrong. The show's gonna be pretty expensive.

What? Have you even seen One Piece? Even a very conservative adaptation would require FAR MORE money per episode than the most expensive Game of Thrones episode, or practically any other tv show for that matter. The reason One Piece is so unacceptable (well, one of many) is because if it's going to have even a resemblance to the source material it's going to look so bizarre and different from anything that can be done for a low or moderate price in live action that they are going to need to spend a lot.

And where's that Bebop series right now? I don't see how this guy's going to bankroll one piece when he hasn't even started Bebop and Bebop should be way less expensive to make.

Going out on a limb here, but I foresee a very
very
very
long road in pre-production limbo

but I suppose you could say that it's really the adventure to get there that counts.

I don't really see your point. It's a live-action adaptation, so of course they will trim down a lot of cartoon-esque elements of the anime. In fact, this could be good if the try something more grounded. They can focus on the core of the pirates thematic, which is all about the adventure.

And here I thought it was just going to look like your average 90's syndicated POS alongside Jack of All Trades and Cleopatra 2029 and Nightman and all the other Canadian filmed crap that couldn't get on a proper network.

No, they're going full The Get Down level disaster where it costs $120 million for 11 episodes.

There's no way this is going to get off the ground. The amount they'd have to spend on the constantly changing set pieces alone would bankrupt any company.
If they're really gung-ho about turning anime into live action shows there are far more adaptable series. Like Blood Blockade Battlefront (even takes place in New York!) or Sword Art Online. (Wait, that one is being turned into a live action show)

A live-action SAO would be more expensive than One Piece. All you gotta do w/ the latter is make it like Black Sails by way of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
