Great review and am very excited to see this. Glad to hear it lives up to its potential for the most part.
When you say the story is the weakest part, how bad are we talking? A B+ for story seems to imply it's still very good all things considered. Laputa also has a very simple story but is ultimately very satisfying without really going too deep on any of the characters/relationships. How does this compare?

Very excited to see this!
While "copies Ghibli's style a bit too slavishly" might be a negative for some, that's the best possible style to copy in my opinion so I'll probably wind up loving it.

Now we can see the end of the meme "All anime sucks, unless its by this guy." I kid.
If I get a chance I'll see it. Not too fond of movie-length anythings.

I'm surprised this review doesn't mention Kiki's Delivery Service at all, particularly given the subject matter, Ghibli's reputation, the black cat, a protagonist whose features resemble early designwork from the Ghibli classic, etc. TBH, that's the largest reason why I'm not much interested in this movie, and it would have been nice if any such similarities were expanded on in the review.
