Yeah, I don't think anyone was going out on a limb making *that* prediction.

Miyazaki will retire... when he dies. The man has film-making in his DNA. If he tries to retire, he just comes up with more ideas and can't stop himself from acting on them.

Retire become bored then eventually pass away or keep doing what you love and maybe pass away while creating a story board.

Now which would you choose?

Anno's bold enough to say what everyone else keeps in their heads...and on message boards.

I expected Hideaki Anno to talk about anything but when he is going to get some work done.

Even when he dies people will still probably be making animation off storyboards he never got to animate his self.

I have the impression that maybe EVA 3.0 was the last film. The original TV show never had a clear cut ending anyway.

Miyazaki is essentially Tupac, isn't he?

What Hideaki Anno failed to say was that he himself retired from making good anime.

There you go, something we all were thinking... wait, was that something Miyazaki said? I can't keep my grumpy old directors straight these days.

Wait, I wasn't thinking that. Lol, what trite. I'm guessing you were going for a "haha, GOT EM!!" reaction though. And who exactly are you referring to anyway? Your wording doesn't make it clear. Both's "grumpy old man" images are largely facades created by millennial otaku and clickbait thirsty journalists who take an assortment of their quotes out of context (one such instance is referenced in this exact article) or outright make some up (i.e. the infamous "anime was a mistake" line). Heck, Anno just recently was responsible for the Japan Animator Expo project, where he basically just pooled a bunch of upcoming and fresh industry talent and let them go nuts with the budgets he allotted them through Studio Khara, with the only restriction being that their films had to be under 10 minutes. If that's what you consider someone being a grumpy old man afraid of change, I've got bad news for you. Also, just as a mod told me once: you're not as funny as you think you are.

Right, I almost expect someone to step up and do a full adaptation of his Nausicaa manga when he passes.

Anno doesn't really make Anime anymore, he is more of a producer. Aside from a few small things, he hasn't done anything outside of Evangelion since Sugar Sugar Rune, which was the last time he worked as an animator.
