I think this is prove that people can be really stupid. One can feel down and decide to quit whatever he or she is doing and then recover the faith. Miyazaki sensei is brave to push his strength a bit further, and shows to truly be an artist that loves his job and can only live happy by creating. Those guys are fools with no love or passion or knowledge of respect, but they're also unaware of what art means for an artist and how physically and mentally hard it can be, specially when you are more than seventy. What he's doing is amazing. I admire Hayao Miyazaki even more than before.

His age is slowing him down though, which in turn slows the production down. He could quite and do still be an artist; landscape paintings or portraits

Same~. He's a source of inspiration. He really sticks to his ideals, which aren't bad and he's an honest and practical person. Sometimes rare for artists. Especially someone with as much acclaim and talent as him.

Inaccurate quotes or not, Miyazaki seems to be un-retiring for negative reasons. Whether it be a specific conflict or something more nebulous, he's coming back to "beat" something or someone. It's impossible to know, but this is going to negatively impact his work. There is some spite going on in there, and I have a feeling that there is a (far more muted) Steve Jobs situation going on there, where we will all find out later that there was some pretty toxic stuff going on regarding his return. I think that I'll be able to come back in a few years with a big I told you so when the house of cards falls on this one. Could be wrong, but that's just the impression I am getting.

Seems Japanese TV is becoming as bad as American TV. Next thing we know, Miyazaki will do the "fake news" line. 
It's none of our business what Miyzaki does with his life. If he wants to retire and then unretire, it's his life. But mocking the guy is just wrong given his contribution to the community for decades is just wrong.

Judging by his link, nothing whatsoever. You could equally argue that Miyazaki is mad with jealousy that Pixar is a hundred times more famous than him worldwide, and he was triggered by the returns for Finding Dory.
Rather more plausibly, Miyazaki just can't find anything in retirement that satisfies him as much as directing. And no, Angry-san, 'satisfaction' does not mean the same as 'having fun'.

Yeah but, for some reason, the same as Picasso chose to paint on canvas, experimented on sculpture and clay, Miyazaki chose to become an animator. Also, slowing production? Good things take their time and it is this inmediacy in the industry that ends in horrid productions. When what you do makes you happy, your soul carries you further, no matter how hard it is. And the things you do out of love show more quality than those made with a deadline and lack of sleep.

To be fair, these guys are comedians, and that's sort of their job. for example, how many times has John Steward or Stephen Colbert used garbage quotes from the Twitterverse/social media or just simply made up to get a laugh in the past few years before he stepped down from the Daily Show/The Colbert Report? This applies to any other comedian performing. And, truthfully, outside of otaku social media, does anyone in Japan really care?
PS: Not sure why you are referring to him as Miyazaki-sensei? Unless you are studying under him, the use of sensei is incorrectly used here.The use of san, or sama would be much more appropriate. Sorry, I'm old, and half Japanese. While I like the fact that many English speaking people wish to learn the language, it grates on me when people use it half-assed correctly  .

I agree that Miyazaki probably has nothing better to do with himself, but considering Miyazaki's long-standing (and WELL publicized) relationship with John Lasseter, no, one really couldn't argue that Miyazaki is mad with jealousy at Pixar. OTOH, the timing DOES fit for it to be POSSIBLE (not "in fact" or even "likely" but POSSIBLE) that Miyazaki IS "jealous" or otherwise doing this because of the success of "Your Name", especially after all the opinion pieces talking about Shinkai supplanting him.
Again, I am NOT saying that is his reason, but if ever there was a movie that one could see getting a "competitive" streak going in Miyazaki, it'd be that one, since it's now the highest grossing anime EVER, and the ONLY non-Ghibli anime to break $200mil.
