I enjoyed ths much more than I expected to. The CG work really is top-class, and I was particularly impressed by how well the grotesque aliens were rendered. I certainly wasn't expecting Nurarihyon's "boob monster" form to make an appearance with no censorship whatsoever, so that was a striking surprise.
The story changes rubbed me the wrong way at first, but the twist at the end made it all worthwhile. spoiler[Kato's friendship with Kurono is too important to be left out of the movie, so I was very glad to see it established by that last flashback.] I just wish they hadn't changed Ayumu's personality, because he's a really sweet kid in the manga, which just makes you feel sorrier about the raw deal he and his brother got after their parents died. All in all, I think this was Gantz's best adaptation yet, and a considerable step up from the TV series and the live-action movies. I'd love to see the manga's "Katastrophe" arc adapted by this movie's staff, but I'm not sure how they could do that without some flashbacks to establish the Kurono/Tae relationship, which is quite central to the whole thing. |

Brilliant movie, whole manga needs to be made like this.

As far as how it looked I thought it was great even forgot it was CG at some points as far as what I was looking at that ranged from horrifying to stomach churning which I guess is a good if dealing with an ultra violence series. Yet is ended up feeling more an extended cut scene to a video game than a self contained narrative. I guess I could say I enjoyed it as much as I could something this dark.

Pretty much this. Having read the manga (very uneven but still enjoyed it), watched the anime (ended before manga character growth which hurt the anime), seen the live action movies (not bad, decent actually), I found myself feeling somewhat disconnected from this latest iteration. I also agree with the review that the twist is pretty decent. However, while I liked the visuals it wasn't fully enjoyable for me. Fans of the franchise or people who are satisfied with action and visuals alone may get more out of this than I did. The review is spot on, but I would rate it lower than a B. |

Can't say I agree with the CG being almost lifelike. It's alright by not-Square Enix standards, but it's still in weightless plasticine people territory. Only thing that stood out to me was the animators apparently prioritizing boob physics over facial expressions. Even in the brief time I spent watching it, with the main-girl it got to the point that it went beyond just :Japan: & into this director's a bit of a creep territory.
As for the film, I got to the point where not-main girl was having her "he's an idiot, but that's why I have to go back & save him" speech before I threw in the towel. Just seemed like your typical angsty but honourable teen trapped in a violent game crap that came out in the wake of Battle Royale & Ichii the Killer. I don't need the knockoffs when I can watch the originals, which both have better looking effects despite being 15+ years old. |

So in you view was it Ichi the Killer ripping off Battle Royale? Battle's story being completed two years(but un-published) before Ichi's manga but Battle's novel published one year after. And why bring up Ichi the Killer? different plot/genre. Gantz's manga being published the same year as Battle's manga was. My two cents Gantz is not a "knock-off", by sharing a genre of 'thrown into a kill or be kill game'. Gantz takes the recently dead of all ages and from all walks of life.Copies them into a "game" to fight 'aliens'. Manga:2000 Battle Royale is about a State sponsored death match, which takes junior high school kids and pits them against each other. Novel:1999/Manga:2000 If anything 'Hunger Games' is the knock off of Battle Royale |

I liked this movie. I'm a bit disappointed that they changed so much from the manga since there are some reactions and scenes that I would have wanted to see, but it makes sense to try and make it more viewable to new comers. Muscle rider and that psychic dude were missing which annoyed me a bit though.

This I would absolutely agree with. In fact, that was my first thought when I read the Hunger Games novels, though I'd be surprised if Suzanne Collins was even aware of the movie or print versions. (She doesn't cite it as one of her inspirations and could easily have put the concept together only from the ones she does cite.) Claiming Gantz is a rip-off that is a sizable stretch. |

It looks like this is a good place to get a taste of Gantz, something I've not had a chance to try up till now. Interesting with your opinion on the CGI, Netflix does seem to prioritize CGI anime shows for their exclusives. And after the most recent Cyborg 009 show looking positively horrific in its stiff blandness, I was really starting to doubt Netflix was going to get anything good in anime. But between this and Blame! looking really good maybe they can turn it around.

With all the talk of what may have influenced Gantz, I suggest everyone check out the Zeiram films and the prequel anime Iria. You will think Gantz is a reboot / reimagining of that old property.
This film is being much more well-received than I anticipated and it seems to be attracting the interest of many who have no prior knowledge of Gantz. I need to sit down and watch this for the spectacle, but the Osaka arc is when the manga jumped the shark for me. |

So the explanation for all this is that Netflix's quality control somehow let an English dub made by Japan several months ago slide into the film, making the female leads' performances somehow get replaced. It's obvious once you hear how they pronounce names & their acting is so flat and unfitting compared to everyone else. Every other voice from the US dub is clearly there except for those 2 who stand out as Japanese natives speaking English. Both Laura and Cristina have tweeted out about this problem as well. Cristina even tweeted out about it again recently |

I don't know nor care much about the manga. What I do know is they way Gantz:O introduces its main character & audience to the game world (or whatever it is) is taken straight from the "I watched Battle Royale" playbook. I mentioned Ichii the Killer because Gantz:O feels like a film made ten years too late to ride the extreme Asian cinema fad. |

The movie entertained but it really ended without a closure due to the fact Gantz's huntings still continue. I also missed those "two vampires" (probably the coolest characters in the manga that disappeared) and a bit disappointed by the lack of Kurono (who was far most developed during these story arcs)
