I'm still skeptical, but somewhat cautiously optimistic. (So much couching in that sentence, you could sleep on it.)

Al looks pretty good, especially since CGI never seems to be Japan's forte (the "Death Note" and "Attack on Titan" movies come to mind).

I'm always a bit worried about live action adaptions of stuff, but if nothing else, Al looks damn good.

I hope this movie turns out well and I just realized the man who plays Mustang sang "History Makers." Not trying to detract from talking about FMA, but I could not resist.

Judging from the trailer, they certainly are making significant progress compared to the CGI used in Attack on Titan. I'm honestly impressed how they effectively made Al fully realistic while keeping his design true to the series. And the trailer CGI does look like they put a major effort.
If the studio can keep that level of detail throughout the movie, it effectively would be at the level of CGI Hollywood established in 2008 with the first Transformers and Marvel movies. Which is almost completely caught up with Hollywood. All they have to do is top ILM with their work on Rogue One, then we could likely see an Industry revival in Japan.
So it's not too far off that we no longer have Hollywoodization of our favorite titles and the creators of these series get the money they deserve. (I'm looking at you "Robotech"!)

Death note? Seriously? I thought the CGI was pretty damn good for a 2006 movie.

I can't be too mad at this. It's got 10 months until it comes out. So I'll probably forget it's a thing.
Plus after it comes out, Madman or someone will screen it at a con or do a limited screening. So I don't know if I'll go out of my way to see it. I'm still scarred from being optimistic about the Attack on Titan movies and seeing those films. Only time heals all wounds.

Looks fine. It's not Hollywood level CG but he looks fine.

maybe they could have just created a real life replica of the suit and had a giant guy inside of it.

Considering Japan's infamous CG abilities when it comes to movies, this isn't half bad, but it's still a really bad CG quality level... and considering the present day programs and techniques, I'd say this falls into the horribad category of the CG market, it'd be passable if this were a TV series and not a movie, but it's the later, and that's something that doesn't speak well of the producers behind the movie. Also, let's not confuse this with the animation quality of the CG, that's a completely different story.
I'm also not really looking forward to this movie for a simple reason, the characters are supposed to be from a sort of northern europe-esque line, but we're getting a Japanese only cast, and though that's to be expected, I won't be able to get into the movie because of this simple fact (and the CG...), which also means I won't be having a lot of fun with the movie.
Overall, I think this movie is unnecessary, and if they were going to do it anyway, they should have done so with the best possible cast and team, for they can't really get pulled by the hype wagon considering FMA ended long ago, and mistakes such as these will only make the movie get forgotten much faster. They should've done this back when FMA was about to end, or right after it ended, not now...

Woud've hit snags anyway due to the fact that Al's armor is supposed to be agile due to the fact it's unoccupied.

That would destroy the illusion that nobody is inside the armor. I would prefer a replica controlled by invisible wires or something like that, just like the good old Yoda. It's difficult, but Alphonse isn't exactly human in this state.

but its a suit of armor you wouldn't see the person inside of it.

not really, it doesn't need to be made of heavy materials.
