my experience with this being the manga, I see this is a simlar case to shin sekai yori, where the manga's more explicit graphicness pretty mcuhc changes the target demographic (the gore is present in the manga, but also the rape, which pretty much makes this, based on the first chapter "rape - the manga").
I see that naturalistic emdieval worlds, as opossed to game-ish are preferred, which Ia gree it, the quasi explanation on how magic and stuff works in shield hero came to cheapen the series (as well as similar), while something more naturalistic like this one or mushoku tensei makes for a more interesting read.

You mention that the entire party of priest girl is slaughtered, but doesn't the Melee girl survive? I thought she just got raped?

Well, technically she survives the initial goblin attack, but Goblin Slayer mercy-kills her. It forms a good parallel to the later battle when Goblin Slayer and Priestess' party is complete, with the elf, dwarf, and lizardman and they manage to save someone in a similar position.

Hemingway disapproves of the Witch.
I thoughtMelee Girl survived the ordeal but was left horribly traumatized for the rest of her life?

Hmm, I wonder if that's a change made in the manga version or something that comes up later? Looking at Yen Press' translation, on page 35 Priestess and Goblin Slayer find Fighter (who I assume is Melee Girl) barely alive in a room of the cave. The strong implication is that she won't make it, but I could see it later turning out that she did. I did get her confused with Wizard answering the earlier question, sorry.

IIRC in the manga the one who gets mercy killed is a female magic user, the priest makes it out alive, but her mental state was similar to the rest of the goblin's "rape harem" whom got sent to a churhc or something

That's pretty in line with the novel (although Priestess isn't quite that badly off), but what about Fighter/Melee? Is she left out? I think she's the one people are confused about, although at this point I'm not sure.

yeah, people are confused about the monk/fighter
in the manga she gets graphically raped (think shinsekai yori manga, where it follow the same plot but the scenes are more graphic), but survives adn tehre's a small onepanel epilogue where it's said that the surviving girls were sent to a monastery or something like that

That's a bit harsh. I have found the realism in the story to be quite refreshing. Humanoid monsters actually acting like humanoid monsters. I didn't get the feel of a D&D campaign.
Don't know about the light novel, but I recommend the manga to those that want their violence to be depicted, and not PC'd.

If anything, this was more Dark Souls than D&D. Using a short sword in a cave instead of a long sword? That's just common sense.
