So Shinkai's work was so popular that the LN version even beat SAO volume sales? Congrats.

Well Shinkai is fairly mainstream. SAO is not. A mainstream hit is going to absolutely crush SAO. |

Sorry, but to say that SAO isn't mainstream is just a really ignorant thing to say. Of course it is main stream, that is why it got 51 episode and a movie across 4 different projects in just the last 4 years. Usually, things don't move so far and so fast for non main stream anime. Keep in mind that this was a new franchise in 2012 and not a well established name thatcould carry it before it's first season unlike Gundam anime, which themselves don't get the same treatment as SAO did and Gundam IS mainstream. Now you can argue which is more popular one right now between the too, but just understand that both are main stream. |

Uh, rofl. No. SAO is no where near mainstream. A long anime series doesn't mean mainstream. SAO is very big with otaku, but like most light novels, manga, and anime, it is not mainstream. Here is a good test to weed a bunch of anime out: what time in the day does it air? https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/d5/03/36/d50336beb623ee43d28551b96722903c.jpg See those times at the bottom of that? SAO aired at midnight. Mainstream tv does not premiere at midnight. Sorry. Sounds like you are one of those people in denial about how many people in Japan watch anime. |

Is the Garden of Words novelization new, riding on Makoto Shinkai's newfound mainstream fame, or is it as old as the movie and people just flocked to what other things the dude's written after really liking your name?

Let me reiterate, SAO is mainstream as far as anime is concerned. I never meant to say that SAO is mainstream in the sense of the full market, but rather in the anime world SAO is considered mainstream, much like Attack on Titan. When I say mainstream I don't mean which one gets the best time slot since that only really shows what demographic the anime is aimed at and the prime ones are really aimed at little kids for garnering tuning in numbers (kids don't make their own money to spend on hobbies). This in not an accurate measure of what is mainstream, the amount of merchandise and the amount of money the Franchise garners is a better representation of what is mainstream and what isn't. SAO defiantly makes a lot of merchandise (that is expensive mind you) and make a lot of money (hence the reason the production committee sees fit to continue to pursuing further adaption of the franchise). This really boils down to if YOU consider SAO mainstream enough to call it mainstream or not, by a lot of standards and others opinions, it is. By yours it may not be. It kinda subjective and a moot point. However, I just wanted to point out that SAO gets enough attention to be considered more then just a forgetable franchise waiting to be replaced by the next best thing and that in of it self is sufficent enough for me to call it mainstream on at least a basic level. Mind you, I don't think SAO really warrants the attention it is getting and its kinda annoying how much it is getting even though there are in (my eyes) more superior production that should be getting said attention and having titles currently held by SAO bestowed upon them. |
