I'm surprised that Rin-Ne is sub-only, considering how popular Ranma and Inyuyasha were.

Punchline is a bright and colorful mess? That sounds like what I saw though apart from the opener, nothing sticks out in my mind. Yes, there twists, some minor and several major but there has to be more to a show than that.
What matters is what the work does with the plot twists; It's the difference between early Shyamalan and late Shyamalan where twists go from making the story to being the story. Punchline can't even manage that much as it doesn't do anything with them. In fact, the show should have taken a few more steps backward on the plot twists so the audience would connect better with the characters as they were initially presented. "And? So? Yeah?" That was my reaction at the end of the series after all the twists were untwisted and the plot played out. "Does it matter? Who are they again? What, exactly, happened that mattered spoiler[apart from the Earth being saved? Wait, why was it in danger again?]" are not questions an anime original should invoke in its audience. Or am I thinking of Classroom Crisis? I don't think it's terrible or boring, just messy. Hanaukyo Maid Team gets rereleased this week? I remember liking the show but not exactly why. The maids? Must have been the maids. It's on my "to get eventually" list. |

Yay, someone else liked Punch Line! There are a few fans of this thing here or there, and when I wore my shirt at Otakon, I did get into a couple of fun conversations with them, but I guess the absurdity of it all really turned many people off. And of course the beginning doesn't really communicate how good it's going to get later on either, so it's hard to blame people for dropping it. I guess I'm fortunate that I actually enjoyed the earlier episodes and never felt like dropping it.

I watched most of punchline and my initial reaction was that making it shelf worthy is extremely generous, but then I tried to remember any detail and I basically couldn't remember anything!
All I remember is that it was an incoherent mess where the main character could have solved the problem fifteen bajillion way but never did. I do remember it trying really hard to throw curve ball to the audience (not that I can remember any if them). It definitely had a bunch of stuff going on at once, but there were so many that none of them felt like they mattered. It wasn't hard to understand so much has nothing was explain and you just had to trust that everything made sense (it didn't). |

I enjoyed Punch Line when I was watching it, but I think it has serious problems as a story.
spoiler[Madoka Magica was credible as a hundred-Homura problem; Punch Line was not credible as a six-billion-Yuta problem. There's no room to even conceive of an equivalent to Madoka episode 10, because there's no character-based equivalent to Homura's self-imposed isolation or her obsessions with protecting Madoka and slaying her personal Moby Dick. Try to imagine how the whole cycle in Punch Line would've started, or how the cat would've developed the plan, or what the plan even was, or how Yuta somehow would've never once collaborated with his ghost self enough to pass useful information down the line, or how the specific chain of events where Guriko convinces Rabura to convince Meika to hack the satellite and the box used to piggyback on the signal is installed and left undetected until it's too late never got interrupted, and the whole thing falls apart.] Also, it contradicts its own time-travel mechanics in the final episode, but that's a minor quibble. Punch Line was good stuff. Arc-V is English only. Just as planned.

When your fandom is strong, no swag is too much.
Rin-Ne is fan repellent. Takahashi is just going through the motions. I'm glad she got it out of her system she needs to spin gold again. She don't need to but I want her to. |

As for Harmony, don't let Nick's review make you not want to see the movie. I am adamant that it is actually quite good. I really enjoyed it when it was in theaters, and i'd hate to see one guy's review keep people from seeing it.

Punch Line was great. Too bad spoiler[that the story is going to continue in ]a game that probably will never come out here. Even without that it was still good though. I enjoy a good time travel story and the twists were fun.
Maybe the game will get an OVA version though. That'd be great

no kidding.That have to be the biggest surprise of all since i was expecting this series to be dubbed a long time now. however considering that Ocean Studios/The Ocean Group have literately fallen from the face of the earth and no one have heard anything from that company or any of that studio's VAs since the final act, it might be a given that this series will be getting the sub only treatment.after all its being licensed by Sentai who tends to go sub only from time to time. Especially since for the longest time ,anime series that are based from Rumiko's work tends to get licensed by Viz Media & get dubbed by the ocean group/ocean studios. the only way i can see the series being dubbed is that if it sells well enough to warrant an english dub release since the manga's popularity isnt enough. |
