I didn't keep up with casting news, so now I'm dissapointed that L isn't played by a British actor.

I'll be freakin' impressed if that Mia Sutton character ended up being a far better character than her Japanese counterpart Misa Amane (though I am assuming they are counterparts).

This is honestly the best way to handle this. Having a bunch of Japanese characters, played by non-Japanese people, in a Japanese setting that most American audiences wouldn't understand, would not be very good. This way its more structured to appeal to an American audience while retaining what Death Note is. Though, now I'm curious as to what they've done with the Shinigami. Have they been replaced by generic grim reapers? Or do they just not exist anymore and the Death Note is some random thing that appeared and was magical?

Couldn't agree more. I'm curiously optimistic about this movie, I really do want it to be good. That said I can already hear the rage induced caps lock comments coming over this development.

Well he's obviously not in character in the pic. So he could still be a weird looking guy. Plus he's only 24 compared to the actor for Light's 21. So it all works out.

L was never stated to be White. The closest he's got in ethnicity is that he's 1/4th Japanese, 1/4th British, 1/4th French or Italian, and 1/4th Russian. So he could be of varying ethnicities.

People are seriously going to get hung up on L being played by an African American actor Rolling Eyes I care more of the actor has the chops to play the role, not if he looks or has the "right" skin color to play role.

Considering this is more of a reimagining, it really shouldn't matter what he looks like. I mean, Watari is Japanese and younger now, and he was one of the only characters before that WASN'T Japanese.

I don't care about "African" part, but I dissaprove "American" part. That's a role one should put a British actor into, IMO.

I couldn't give two craps about the casting; what I'm curious about is what this will do with the story.

I know the recent Death Note live-action TV adaptation veered pretty heavily from the source material but was still interesting in its own right, so I'm more than willing to give it a lot of leeway so long as the end result is compelling.

I don't care about the actors, though that L casting change is rather.. unnecessary.
Why would anyone want to re-do (and westernize) Death Note? Nothing will ever compare to the greatness of the manga, we've seen it time and time again with the many movies and j-drama. It will probably be bad and people that haven't seen it yet will brush it off as something not worth seeing, tarnishing its image.

I'll be looking forward to the japanese future-world Death Note, not this thing.
