GuP as science fiction?
I love the series, but I'd never classifiy it as science-fiction, nor I think it is of the same caliber as the other listed titles.

Do you live in a world where there are aircraft carriers with flight decks tens of miles across that have been converted into small cities?

I have not seen the Girls und Panzer movie, but the series is definitely science fiction.
In addition to the school ships and the general alternate reality setting the technology used in the tankery competitions is something that we do not have. Unfortunately the show never goes into detail about how it works. I want to read the manga and see if it gives any background information.
Now I need to do some research and find out which of the books that were nominated have been licensed and translated in the US so that I can read them.

Girls und Panzer and Mad Max in the same category. What a time to be alive
They are both in one of my categories as well, 10/10 shows :3

GuP may not be classic hard Sci-fi, but then again neither really is Mad Max. That's pretty much just a post-war car chase. But I do like them both.

I liked the Psycho Pass movie and Knights of Sidonia, not sure if they'll win awards though.
As for including Girls und Panzer, it's tricky. Like GDMaid Man said, you could argue that Mad Max isn't really science fiction. Does low-tech count as sci-fi? As another example, what about Haruhi Suzumiya? There's time travel, aliens, and physics but if ask people to describe the show they'll usually say it's a comedy or slice of life comedy. I guess it depends on what your definition of sci-fi is.

I would like to see the definition of science fiction that excludes Girls und Panzer and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
It should be interesting.
