I'm not to shocked there is only so much room for these types of mystery delivery boxes and Nerd Block already had an anime block box. Though, I am sad I missed the Otakon deal.

I signed up for Omakase so I could register for Otakon this year for basically free. I've not cancelled it yet. Would I still get the Miku box?

A) Sorry, Germany, but nobody CARES about Viewster in NA as a movie streaming site enough to make it a self-marketing name-brand competitor to Amazon, and shifting the marketing emphasis to target streaming-anime Crunchyroll fans didn't work either,
and
B) Were they the ones that had the controversy over an all-Vocaloid Otaku-box turning out to be mostly bootlegged fake merchandise, and the company unaware of it? Or was that someone else?

Well its a tough sell and something that take awhile to build up the customer. I wasn't a fan of either KLK or naruto so I didn't grab either of them, but if something interesting came along maybe I'd have subscribed.
Leaving the content unknow until after shipping might have helped. Or not focusing on one franchise.

Yes, you should still get the Miku box (and if you didn't pay up-front, your credit card will be charged I assume).

I really liked the idea of the themed boxes, and the quality of good being put in them (although that Sasuke figure was unfortunate).
However from a business point of view, you bring up a really good point. A week ago I was thinking about Omakase's business model and I concluded that the way they went about it wasn't quite right. As you said, people only subscribed when a box they wanted came along.
What set them apart from the other anime boxes is, sadly, what limited their growth rate. That said, it is not what killed the company. You'll have to read between the lines of the letter that was sent out to figure out why they are closing.

I only bought the Naruto box for the free Otakon badge (free because I then sold off the Naruto stuff to friends who actually like it). I would have been interested if they had a show I liked, but I don't care for KLK, aruto, or Vocaloid. They're right about one thing, subscribers only wanting either the box or the viewing service. I only briefly glanced over the viewing portion after getting the Naruto box. Crunchyroll, Funi, and Hulu already fill all of my anime watching needs.

I'm surprised they're still trying to get a foothold in the anime streaming market at all, tbh. Unless that's what this is really about...

After all those sponsored box videos on YouTube I had been wondering how the box had been doing, guess the numbers weren't setting the world alight like they were hoping.

They gave up on that quite a while ago. Omakase was first thought up as a way to help market their streaming offerings, but then it became the principal business line.
They've pulled back from streaming both in the USA and in the UK where they used to be much stronger.
I suspect they will continue to offer streaming as long as they have licenses, but they won't acquire any new content. Maybe they'll acquire new non-anime, but on the anime side I think they're done. That's the consensus in the industry. Viewster A.G. is first and foremost a B2B/Whitelabel company, and I think they are aiming to return to that.

I was interested in the streaming service, but not the box. I've never liked getting random stuff in the mail, especially if it's for a show I don't care for, so that turned me away more than anything. If they just had a simply streaming subscription, I would be on that. I think a lot of people felt the same way, given their statements.

Do I still get the free volume 2 hardcover silver coated Kill la Kill manga? They emailed me that if I continue to subscribe, after the next box ships, theyll ship a copy for free...
