I'm guessing it will likely be a split cour then. And given the way the storytelling has been handled so far, it wouldn't surprise me if it is 24 episodes in total.

This would make a whole lot of sense based upon how the show has been progressing. 12 episodes would be way too short for a show like this. Now to wait and see if it'll be split cour or if they're going to continue straight into next season.

More or less going to be split cour. If it were one continuous season, I'd feel they'd be soliciting more BD/DVDs than just 4 volumes for 12 episodes.

Sounds about right. It was feeling like a one cour until today's episode actually. But with the introduction of two new Bubuki teams it felt like the direction of the show opened up to something bigger than it was before.

Yeah, this explains a lot. Like you said, with this week's additions, it'd be trouble to keep the story going without it ending in a steaming pile by Ep12-13. I definitely want to see them get into Reoko-sama and Shizuru/Akihito's stories more than the poking they've done to this point.

I hope that's true, because otherwise it will just be a narrative mess to wrap-up all the existing elements (including those introduced in episode #8) within another 4-5 episodes.

HELL YEAH! This is one of my favorite shows this season. People are missing out by not watching it because they don't like CG.

This same streaming site listed "Heavy Object" as 24 episodes and this seems to be true. Since this type of news likely came from an official source tied to the production company, I wonder why they didn't send this to ANN before the French streaming site.
