I bet you that 10 seconds later a shop attendant came by, bowed apologetically, and gave them one of the plushies for free as an apology as well as refunding their 100 yen.
I've seen this happen in ufo catcher shops in Japan: If there is any technical difficulty at all they are, like any other Japanese business, extremely nice and helpful. Omotenashi and all that. |

That's not rigged, it just broke. The UFO catchers in Japan are 99% of the time not rigged. Except for the ones by the train station near Universal Studios, but you can tell. It's a strategy thing. It's worth googling and it's worth trying them out if you go to Japan. (fyi, the ones in Shibuya and Ikebukuro are easier than the ones in Akihabara, and also cheaper, for obvious reasons) |

Oh, is that how ownership of UFO Catchers work in Japan? I'm used to the way claw machines work in the United States, which are owned by operators who make an agreement with the business, and the operator is responsible for maintenance. (The operator's also usually the only one with the keys anyway.) I've had a malfunction on a claw machine before, though not nearly as messed up as this one. I managed to pick up a Charizard plush, but one of its horns got stuck in one of the mechanisms once it reached the ceiling, so the claw could not drop Charizard once it got to the hole in the corner. The people working there had no clue what to do, and they didn't even know who the operator was. The best anyone could do was put an "Out of Order" sign on the claw machine and wait for the operator to return. I later learned that most operators of redemption machines and arcade machines in stores are usually that elusive. Most provide no contact information in case of malfunctions, and most do not show themselves except to come collect the money and restock the machines if necessary. There is the odd few who are elusive but care very much to keep their machines in good condition though--you can leave a note on the machine, and it'll be good as new two or three days later. More often though, I come back to see the note is gone but the machine is in even worse shape than before. I can see the logic behind it: Why spend money and time to fix it when each player who puts coins in can independently learn it's broken? With something like this though, it's extremely obvious what's wrong with it, and someone had better come fix it ASAP because nobody's going to put money into that thing until they do. |

This seems like a place to tell this story: The first time I went to Japan, I played A UFO catcher that had some Pokemon Puppets. I managed to get the Pachirisu one. But when it fell into the hole it got stuck because it was too big to fall in. I had to wait until the attendant showed up in order to get it out.

The only claw machine games I play here are the ones at theme parks since they're usually on the up and up and if the machine breaks down I can just call the attendant who ether has the keys or can call the person who does and fix the problem right away.

I remember as a kid when I went on a vacation to Spain with my family. Our hotel had one of these in the lobby, filled with different Pokemon plush toys. With my brother's help, I think we usually missed maybe 1 out of 10 pulls. Even the hotel clerk cheered for us, and was amazed by how many we managed to pull out of that box.
Makes me wonder just how many of these things are unfairly rigged. |
