Congrats to Star Wars. 14 years was a good hold at #1 for SA.

Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky spirited away was bound to be overtaken eventually but it took Star Wars to do it which just shows how popular Star Wars is in Japan.

My only problem with all these box office records is that inflation does a lot of the work. I wish they talked about these records in number of tickets sold, not yen or dollars.
That being said I actually checked what Spirited Away's yen value would be with today's values. Turns out it's about 1.614 billion yen. It's closer, but Star Wars still wins out. And wow, Japan's inflation/deflation is crazy. |

That was my issue too. I was just checking some things out. But I am still a bit skeptical because even if adjusted for inflation, it is possible that tickets are more expensive now independent of the inflation. In other words, even if inflation is 20% for example, tickets may actually be 25% more expensive. So you have the possibility of 3 things: 1) more sales due to more theater space 2) inflation 3) higher cost of tickets beyond inflation |

Well, as far as Rian Johnson goes, he's still got Brick, which was a solid movie (no pun intended) when it came out and still holds much weight (pun intended) today. |

I believe SA wipes the floor compared to Star wars so its a little sad but oh well....

I didn't even think about that. You're right though. I doubt ticket prices have gone up and down with the yen's value. They've probably just went up. There's also 3d ticket pricing giving a boost. Though I'm not sure if that's as much of a thing in Japan as it is in the US. |

It's difficult to subscribe to your point of view when Takahata does 1 film every other decade or so. The rest of the films done by studio Ghibli are pure entertainment. Politically correct to the extreme. Fast food material for kids and parents. In this respect they're no different from Disney films, marketing power and global reach aside. |

That's the North American name for the first movie. Didn't realize that that type of record stood in Japan. People been talking about how Star Wars has been smashing records, they weren't kidding. |

It didn't sell more tickets than Yôkai Watch on the 2 day weekend which is the official frame used in Japan. Since Japan, like many European countries, ranks box office using admissions, Star Wars technically didn't even debut at #1 there : http://eiga.com/ranking/.
On the 2 day frame it registered the 17th biggest weekend in Japan in terms of revenue and the 21th biggest in terms of revenue. Basically, another 'Star Wars is breaking all the records' article which isn't exactly true when you look a bit closer. Not to mention that In terms of total gross, it will be lucky to do a third of what Spirited Away did in Japan. |

Kids tickets always bring extra tickets with them - their parents. So as the Jedi say, always 2 there are (at least): a master (kid) and an apprentice (parent). So for every 1 person who wants to watch the movie, there's 2 tickets (at least).
One can't really say that though, since a lot of the Star Wars tickets sold on Friday when it premiered. Movies in Japan usually premiere on a Saturday. So, if people are going to compare the 2-day ticket sales, for Star Wars they have to use the Friday & Saturday ticket sales, not the usual Saturday & Sunday ticket sales for movies that usually premiere on Saturday.
Spirited Away did about $230M in Japan; a third of that is about $77M. $77M is surpassed by a lot of movies in Japan, so that won't be too hard. Now, matching Spirited Away is the almost impossible part. The only one to come close recently is Frozen. Because it would take months and months of staying power at the top of the box office. The same way with Avatar - many movies have since broken many of Avatar's records, but what even those record-breaking movies couldn't come close to breaking is Avatar's longevity, and that's why Avatar is still #1 worldwide by a long shot. Star Wars VII has a shot at $2B, but even an acclaimed franchise as Star Wars would take a miracle to surpass Avatar (China is the unknown wild card - Star Wars has not opened in China yet, not till next month). |
