First I was ecstatic, because I will be able to watch this legally online in a little over a month. Now I'm more curious as to why it's going on Crunchyroll as opposed to a limited theatrical release like Anthem of the Heart, or the Ghost in the Shell Arise movie.
I guess it's possible that they'll still do a theatrical run, but it seems like pretty terrible business strategy to put it up for official streaming before that. So PonyCan plans to release this film in North America and produces an English subtitled trailer, but YouTube won't show me that trailer because "This video contains content from PONYCANYON. It is not available in your country." which is the USA in North America.

I certainly would love to see this in the theatre, but I don't see it happening. Considering ponycanyon, who seems to still be trying to figure out how they want to operate in the US is handling the release. Not to mention this film being completely new IP. Most anime movies funimation (if not all? I'm probably forgetting some) put out have been part of franchises and Anthem of the Heart from AoA had a connection to Anohana pushed pretty hard. I still want to hold onto my tiny bit of hope, though. Everything I've seen about it points to this being a visual treat that would be amazing on the big screen. |

This is a nice surprise, I was looking forward to watching this movie, and it's great that I'll be able to watch it legally. I hope Crunchyroll continues streaming movies (maybe Kizumonogatari? Pretty please?).
And it is more surprising that I was able to watch that trailer that is causing some problems. And I don't even live in the States! |

That's true, I suppose. I know there have been a good number of non-franchise films shown, so that's what I was banking on, but most of them do have pretty big names behind them, like Expelled From Paradise, Ghibli films, the upcoming Boy and The Beast, etc. I think the Itoh Project films were supposed to show though, and they are pretty unknown in the west, though that whole situation is a whole other story. |

The part about "theatrical screening of the film" really intrigues me. If crunchyroll had a subscription option for going to a near movie theater to watch 12+ recent subtitled anime movies a year, I would be very interested.

If you read the article more carefully, you would see that not only were they doing a limited theatrical screening but also that the screening is before the streaming premiere. |

...As long as they don't do a 'retraction' later on, like with the standard release of Braves of the Six Flowers...
But for now, world-wide release, yeah

Judging that streaming a movie is way cheaper than producing a bunch of blurays and DVDs, people don't preorder free streaming (or are already paying for a subscription), and that there isn't any other option being simultaneously released, aside from a screening in at least one city, they have neither the cost incentive to retract it nor the preorder numbers to know if it isn't worth it. They won't do a retraction on this one, definitely not. Why? Because Chinese legal streaming site BiliBili (similar to Nico Nico douga) has also acquired the same-day streaming rights for this movie. Yeah, from now on, hopefully if a movie is not shown on movie threaters worldwide, at least we get to see the online simulcast. I'm glad they're streaming the movie and hope they do this more often. I wouldn't mind doing pay per view like with Gundam the Origin. Aside from the first two Madoka movies and at least one film festival, the theatrical releases pass over the Philly area, making the closest places New York or Pittsburgh, which are farther than I want to go. That's probably because Philly area fans didn't go out to see it enough, which includes myself, as I didn't go to the theatrical release of the first two Madoka movies (mainly because of generally not watching movie versions of series aside from the Eva and Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex). But streaming them makes the movies much closer.

Also DC and Baltimore. Still not close, but much closer than Pittsburgh, and we get a pretty good selection down here. The theater where I usually go for anime movies screened both Anthem and Love Live in the last few months. Anyway, this definitely looks like my kind of movie. I think I probably would've gone to see it if it had been shown in a theater, but in the absence of that I'll be happy to watch it on CR. |

Yeah it's pretty limited. Unless they announce others screenings soon, I imagine that will be the extent of screenings. There isn't much time between now and the streaming premiere. And like you said it wouldn't make sense to do a theatrical screening after making it available streaming. |
