It gives the impression that the plotting only actually had about five episodes' worth of content to work with and so had to kill lots of time in order to make a full-season series out of it

That's exactly what happened. They could've honestly done 2wei as a single 13-episode cour, but decided to go with two 10 episodes seasons for whatever reason. This is also the reason for the naming, as 2wei is the second season of the manga, and next is 3rei.

I don't think I've ever agreed more with a review. This is exactly, spot-on, what I thought about this show. Over half the season is excruciatingly mundane filler, with maybe a couple positives, and the last episodes are much, much better, more plot-relevant, and of a different tone, so the switch is jarring. The "positives/negatives" section at the bottom could be summed up as
Positives: the second half
Negatives: the first half

Good review, and if the second half of the season is any indication of the the next season, I'm definitely watching it*.

*well, I'm watching it anyway, as this franchise has me Stockholmed by this point.

Those who had read the manga knew it would to be half-SOL/fillerish stuff, so while I enjoyed it, I can't really defend it either.

3rei is pretty much the reason most people like this series, less fanservice and comedy, a lot more seriousness and Fate-ness(?). To compare the F/SN routes, it would be the Prisma equivalent of Heaven's Feel

I think 'undertones' is low-balling it somewhat, it's pretty blatant. Unless they fall somewhere between indifference and 'Kiss her you fool!' to the loli-service, I can't imagine anyone enjoying this series.

I would not call it "indifference", just as people have gotten used to high amounts of gun violence on broadcast TV series/movies, many anime fans have gotten used to the loli antics in Prisma, but just as people do not enjoy gun violence in real life, I would say most people watching Prisma Illya are not looking for lesbian loli action in live action.

I liked the slice of life half of Herz! At least after watching Illya in UBW last season I kept thinking "she deserves better" and herz! was just the ticket, we see Illya enjoy a (kind of) normal life, until it is payback time for the one that ripped her heart out >_<Just>_<

I agree entirely with this review.

I'm really hoping that Silver Link deviates from their new trend of botching adaptations and goes straight to the action of 3rei instead of attempting to drag it out with more badly placed SoL.

Yep, that's how I feel about it. I'd actually give this show a shot just to see Illya go on her adventures and be happy and spoiler[generally live a better life than than the life she lived in the main series], but I just can't get past the ridiculous loli fanservice.

STOP, Prisma Illya. You don't need to do that. It does more harm than good. You are actively turning me away. Sad

They can't smack a 3 after the title because 3rei is something completely different.

But yeah, too much airtime kinda killed this. 3rei is good though.

I dunno, it is a pick your poison scenario, we can go with loli yuri, or the show could have instead doubled down on the "onii-chan worship" that was present even in the original Fate material.

Boy, it's a difficult call on which would be more odious, since both are eye-rollers for entirely different reasons.

Glad to hear that the source material for 3rei is more highly-regarded. Now I definitely have something to look forward to.

Honestly didn't mind the SoL stuff or the loli fanservice (Honestly enjoyed most of it since I enjoy seeing Fate characters in a less depressing setting than normal, and I love Illya and Kuro lol), but I'm not as uptight as some people are about things. I'm still waiting to buy 2wei and 2wei Herz! on Blu-ray, but Sentai is taking forever announcing when they're releasing both :p Can't wait for 3rei next year, it's going to be epic.

I have not watched this show yet, but I should think it's pretty obvious there will be 'blatant loli understones'. I mean, it's a magical girl spinoff of Fate/Stay Night where the main character is the loli who didn't have that much screentime on the original, so really, what do you expect.

I have played the original visual novel and watched Fate/Zero and Ilya was always my favorite character who I was disappointed to find out was not a heroine and didn't have nearly as much screentime as Saber or Tohsaka. And seeing how this spinoff came to be, I'm clearly not the only one who wanted to see more Ilya. Therefore, the excessive fanservice shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who's familiar with the series. They did the same thing with the Higurashi OVAs (which I also didn't mind as much as others, mainly because the original visual novels are full of fanservice and silly scenes).

That being said, I can understand some people being uncomfortable with the loli fanservice. However, if that's the case, you're probably not the target audience for this show. There are other more innocent (and thematically darker) magical girl shows you could watch like Madoka Magica or Day Break Illusion.

PS. Not trying to start a loli/anti-loli flamewar. Just giving my two cents as a fan of the Fate series and Ilya.

That aside, the third 10-episode season is a classic example of what happens when a series tries to be something it isn't, and thus for more than half of its run basically ignores what is actually the strength of this branch of the franchise.

Huh. Interesting. To me, it seemed like loli fanservice was the entire reason this series has been doing so well.

I also like how people are allowed to hate on yuri loli but when I said I found yaoi and such gross (I never said it was WRONG or any such hateful terms), I got threatened with a ban. I guess it's because yaoi is more accepted. :\

Agreed on all fronts- though some of the "filler" in the first half of the series was actually anime-original, not just extra chapters from the original work. Other than that one bit (and the OP/ED mixup) I agree wholeheartedly with this review! Smile

(I think you mixed up the OP/ED names- "moving soul" by Minami Kurabayashi and "TWO BY TWO" by Yumeha Kōda are the OP/ED for the 2wei, not 2wei Herz!. 2wei Herz!'s op is "Wonder Stella" (ワンダーステラ) by fhana and the EDs are "Happening Diary" (ハプニング☆ダイアリー) by Yumeha Kōda and "Wishing diary" by Yumeha Kōda.)

Yeah it's kinda ridiculous the amount of bias I'm seeing here on ANN. There's nothing wrong with liking one of them compared to the other, but of course we're seeing some blatant bs here.
