I enjoyed Sabagebu quite a lot, don't think there was an episode that didn't have me laughing at some point. The film parodies were especially great, and I loved that Momoka was so horrible and sadistic. And the way the show ends is great too. spoiler[RIP Momoka] Laughing

Yes, A Lull in the Sea is a tremendously well produced show. I enjoy and like it a lot, but (like Gabriella) I do not love it. I bought the BD premium edition, and the visuals definitely justify the extra expense to have it on HD.

A Lull in the Sea is among Mari Okada's best work, but I think that Hanasaku Iroha and Anohana are better written.

I love A Lull in the Sea which is very much a sea in itself, either all calm on the surface with murky depths or a raging storm bringing everything to the surface. Unfortunately, it's one of those shows that you can't judge until you've reached the midpoint so just watching two, three or even ten episodes doesn't reach the heart of the series.

So you'll just have to tide yourself over with the excellent visuals, voice work and music until the real story reaches the surface.

It's hard to do this without resorting to ocean puns. I have the BD box set but apart from the BDs... no, I'd rather just have the BDs.

Sabagebu's "mean streak" is what endeared the series to me, too. Very reminiscent of Gintama and the latter seasons of Galaxy Angel.

I get Sabagebu confused with Stella Women’s Academy, High School Division Class C³ because the premise is the same. Sounds like Sabagebu is a lot more light-hearted.

Never watched Lull in the Sea. It looks nice, but I'm not that into romantic melodramas. I did enjoy Sabagebu! a lot though. Like others said, Momoko was surprisingly sadistic and amusing, and the action movie parodies were hilarious. Gonna get this one on my shelf hopefully soon.

What's with the price of the lull in the sea set? NISA premium sets from my experience are usually in the 50ish/13 eps range. What made this one 50 more expensive?

I'm always shocked to learn that people actually like A Lull in the Sea; I barely made it through the first episode, whose only redeeming quality was the ridiculous "fish-knee" thing; it reeked of the usual moe romance junk. Gabriella talks about how Mari Okada deals with "big feminine emotions" in her shows, but I've always associated her with laser-targeted otaku romance affairs like Toradora. I also thought the art style was hideous, a product of the cookie cutter K-ON-esque designs that permeate the industry nowadays like so much bad pop music blaring over the speakers at a fast food joint.

To each their own, I suppose. I should note that I don't mean this as an attack on Gabriella or anyone else in the thread. Shows like this rub me the wrong way.

I was completely ready to drop it, 2 episodes in. I hardly saw any redeeming plot points or characters in those two, the main being particularly insufferable. It got much, much better, though, at least imo.

I always felt that Lull in the Sea was too weak of a teen romance to make into a straight forward romance and a fantasy far too flawed to hold up on its own. Smooshed together the strengths of the one are supposed to distract you from the weakness of the other.
Unfortunately for me the weaknesses just combined and drowned out the strengths of both. Got though it, but you'd have to tie me down to watch it again and all the while I'd be yelling about endlessly vacillating idiot kids and the silliness of cooking in pots on a stove underwater while watching your underwater TV... among other things.
