I always assume, unless mentioned otherwise, that a show will run for 1 cour.

This is a safe assumption but sometimes it seems better if a series was 13 TV episodes. Given how popular various light novels are, you could argue that the short ONA/OVA eps as being an additional cour or mini cour.
