I can't believe this
Maybe there's hope for an Ocean Waves dub in the future as well!

I am cautiously optimistic that one of my all time favorite Ghibli movies will finally be available in the US!

Hopefully GKIDS will work something out and we'll finally get a US release.

An english dub for Only Yesterday? Oh hell yes! It wasn't too long ago when I watched this one and I was pleasantly surprised by it.

I give most things in Linkin a pinch of seasoned skepticism as most of it is self proclamation which is no recommendation. In short, believe it when you hear it.

I'd agree to take all rumors with a grain of salt, but the idea that it's the same From Up on Poppy Hill producer, now that Disney's finally gotten past the idea that they don't have to wrestle with releases for every unmarketable period-slice-of-life Ghibli dub that GKids can take up the slack of selling to the arthouse market, it should free up a bit of distribution.
If GKids could sell Poppy Hill to an art-anime audience, they can sure as heck sell this.
Meanwhile, I know that My Neighbors the Yamadas is still caught in Disney's clutches, since Disney did that one "themselves", but still doesn't know how to sell non-Miyazaki Ghibli.

Except that this guy is a real professional with a 100% track record in terms of things he puts on there.

Just imported the Taiwanese Blu-ray, too! What timing.
Can't really complain about a North America release of Only Yesterday, though. I'll buy it if and when it comes out, and am excited that more people might get to see one of Ghibli's best films.

The Blu Ray is worth importing now in any event.
Not sure how a dub would go over or add to anything on this film.
I will buy any English release, but it will stay shrink wrapped unless it has really good extras.

Only Yesterday isn't my favorite Ghibli film, but it's good that it'll get a dub and hopefully an HD release. That upcoming US Miyazaki box set is too expensive for my tastes and I wish it had the other Ghibli films too.

Is it true that Disney forgode a dub for this because there was lines they wanted to change but Ghibli wouldn't let them. I heard one was something about how a character was currently having a period and they wanted to remove any reference to it.

This is great news. I hope the dub is good, and I want to believe this also means a NA physical release.
Only Yesterday is my favorite anime movie and would love to watch it in HD with a solid dub and better focus on its gorgeous visuals. By the way, the Japanese BD (which I imported) has English subtitles.

It's not that big a shock. They got a reason to release it here, now that Kaguya got nominated for an Oscar. Wish I could say the same about Ocean Waves, though. But I hope Only Yesterday becomes popular for that to happen.
Eric: Has nothing to do with Poppy Hill. See above. Also, I imagine Disney passed on Poppy Hill, because Earthsea wasn't as successful as they'd hoped.

Um, actually, they've done ok with Whisper of the Heart and The Cat Returns. It's just that Only Yesterday and Ocean Waves would've been cartoons which pissed off the soccer moms, due to their content. [Especially with the latter featuring minors getting drunk.] Princess Mononoke was once a hot potato for them, too, but I guess it got a bit of a pass, because of its fantasy angle.
Marshal: They said it skewed older than the audience they were targeting. Although they've done their own cartoon on menstruation, which you can read about on Snopes.

Linkedin is very similar to Wikipedia. What you see is what each person on it wants you to see. It's all self edited with no accreditation, or references. For what it's worth even I'm in there, though that was fluke too complicated to discuss here. Disney had Only Yesterday from the start of the Ghibli contract began. They didn't think it was worth dubbing back then and I can't see what has changed that they would want to spend that large amount of money on what will surely not give a large enough return to even break even of that investment. I'll believe it when I hear it. Simples.
