Radical changes and not feeling obligated to put the most popular character? Awesome, that's the right attitude! I like these guys.

Exactly! Creating satisfying new recipes with the same ingredients IS the right attitude to have.

Oh come on! if you are taking from a source material then be as faithfull to the source as posible but if you want to be original and innovative then write your own original scripts maybe taking some inspiration here or there, dont go for this awkward middle where neither fans or newcommers are satisfied.
Be faithfull or original, not both, youll end up with a weird mix, everyone before you who tried failed, you arent better.

Meh, couldn't care less, so long as it generates more money for the series, I'm happy.

Well, at least the production team of live-action Attack on Titan can't be blame entirely for the changes that were made to the show since Hajime Isayama was the one that ordered them...and, of course, even the producers were disheartened that they had to make them, so there you have it.

The changes seem odd, but if the resulting material is still good and profitable then I guess I don't have much room to complain.

diefty: Why being completely faithful? It's a different medium (from anime to live-action, and from long-running series to movie), which means less time, different expectatives (j-dramas are not mainstream because cartoony behavior common on animated stuff doesn't work on live-action, it's cringing), and also "same shit, different color", why seeing something that is the same and would not be translated well anyway?
It's better if you take the premise and you give it a different approach to see other ways it could be used, because premises have a lot of potential and directions they could be used, and in this case, from epic-action show to pure horror movie, both are valid. Creative liberty also gives opportunity to producers to do whatever they want without being forced to a constrained script which will be done probably uninspiringly. And if this was a new IP it would be inmediately accused of ripping off the original series, and if they wanted to avoid those critiques it wouldn't be possible to keep the movie as it is without changing its essence.
Also, Edge of Tomorrow did the same to the japanese light novel "All you Need is Kill" (taking the main elements in its own way) and it paid off well. So yeah, it's possible, and so far the first Titan movie has been well received.

I mean, at least they're keeping true to the original story in some way, as well as consulting the actual writer, as opposed to what Hollywood does to manga or anime adaptations.

Changing the medium and doing out of your way to make changes like in this movie are completely different things with equally different results. For starters fans of the franchise would enjoy the version they like not a watered down forced translation, it may be the "same shit" but it´s the shit that works well, unlike this version.
It´s fine for the author to try approaches with his work but if someone wants creative liberty the should write their own script with 100% liberty. Also im not saying the director should make this movie with a different tittle, im saying this movie shouldnt happen at all, they should either make an animated attack on titan faithfull movie or a completely original movie that isnt similar enough to be accused of a rip-off, they should completely change the essence completely and make an original story not feed from an already popular franchise.
Finally, Edge of tomorrow was fine but still clearly inferior to the book which was already serious and realistic enought for the translation to be easy, except for the Scifi stuff that a big Hollywood budget could deal with, that was done fine. This Attack on Titan movie is making all the wrong changes. Lets not forget that how much money a movie makes dosent equal quality, the reviews arent great and i personally think it was kinda bad, it made money but wasnt well received critically.

So pretty much The Paul W. S. Anderson Resident Evil film series, except it is AoT.

Exactly. A bestseller, trendsetter, probably one of the most popular gateway anime/manga in the last ten years--let's gut it, and rely solely on the name and brand itself to make lots of money. Baffling.

I do honestly think it is a good thing to make a movie of this stature, non-canon. It will be a surprise for ALL of us, instead of just some of us. It makes more people want to go out and see it who would have bypassed it because they felt they knew all of the material already.

Hmmm, well I figured it would change a lot. I'm still not sure how to feel about it though.

Yeah I didn't expect the live action movies to feature all the characters. I mean there's like what, 30 of them in the manga??? I wonder if Reiner, Bertholdt, Krista, or Ymir. If they aren't in than yeah no kidding the movies are going to be different, those four are pretty essential the manga story (Krista especially). I suppose it'd be way too many storyline threads to keep going in one movie.
