Hi, I'm new to manga. I've just recently started collecting the Dragon Ball volumes (The ones published by Gollancz I think, here in the UK). However I've put that on hold as I've been hearing about it being censored after a few volumes. I understand that manga's do get edited a bit, I was wondering if anyone can tell me and give examples to what extent the Dragon Ball mangas are censored/edited. Thanks!

Um well in Dragonball they might want to censor Goku's prevalance to go running nude a bit and some other nudity might be censored as well. lol

I don't think Viz edited America's...did they?
Anyway there's a few scenes with Bulma every once in a while.

Viz edited the American version starting sometime in the Androids/Cell saga. It started with removing a gun from #17's hand and there were more things later on as well.

I meant the original DB series....sorry. I forgot that DB and DBZ are called the same thing elsewhere.

Wow, I wasn't aware of any edits to DB/DBZ (I have a few volumes of DBZ but am no expert on the manga). The editing out of a gun really surprises me.

yeah, i saw some scenes from the Buu saga and the guns are changed from guns that go BANG into ray guns that go ZAP. odd isn't it. i have the french version (wtf) and the scenes are all there in their bloody, ray gun free glory.

The original DBZ manga was "unedited" in a sense of there being a lack of controversial content up until the Cell Saga; following this, there were consistent "taste" edits, namely, blood/guns/cigarettes/alcohol (rare) edits that were made, which toned down the art quality quite a bit.
DB's manga was fully published unedited, but a year or two ago VIZ Media started censoring newer editions of the volumes and phasing out the obsolete, non Shounen Jump identified manga. It's VIZ Media's attempt to appear less controversial to parents in American shores.
Gollancz Manga and the United Kingdom have higher censorship standards than the United States and even Australia, though; all Gollancz has licensed from VIZ Media are its low-quality translations, but I would suspect the English volumes in the UK to recieve even stricter censorship than in the states.
