I bought the soundtrack, but after that review I doubt that I'll ever try to watch the anime.
I gather the OP referred to was the track called "Love The World" that sounds like a series of oohs and aahs with some kind of synthetic bird whistling noise? Track/artist listing: https://canta-per-me.net/discography/tasogare-no-udewa/ |

I think the bigger shock for me when I originally watched this show was that Cartoon Network actually aired it. Then again, it showed up not long after SIGN and was shuffled off into the later hours pretty quickly, so I have to think that Bandai got Cartoon Network to take this as part of a package deal more than the network wanting it specifically.

Don't watch it. I saw this years ago on Cartoon Network and I couldn't tell if Shugo was in love with his sister or his sister's avatar. It just confused me. The only good thing that came from watching this anime was the end credit song: Emerald Green by See-Saw. |

This is one of those instances where I just shrug and say, "Go read the manga... maybe." I mean, the manga IS better, for sure. But it's still got the same flaws as this, just with a legitimate plot and a better message behind it (and a better AI character to replace the iffy one in the anime).
It also hurts the story that it's never referenced in .hack again except for in .hack//LINK, which kinda also brings into play the alternate series, mostly for fanservice sake and not actual franchise or story relevance. However, that's probably better for the series itself. I'd certainly recommend it for its music score and to general .hack fans who will watch anything .hack without bias, but it's not on the top of my favorites list for sure. Nowhere near it. And it's pretty bottom-tier on my .hack franchise titles list, anyway. There are worse things in the series, but not by too much. |

It's also mentioned in passing in Terminal Disc (the bonus story summation that came with G.U. Special Edition), and basically in a shruggy, "oh yeah and that existed" kind of way. So yeah, it is ultimately ignorable. |

Yeah, the manga's better, though the translation is an infamous heap. All of Tokyopop's efforts with regards to .hack are like that, really.
You'd think they could be bothered to play maybe the first 15 minutes of the first game, but nope. |

This show was fun! I like it. It's somewhat a guilty pleasure of mine. If anyone wants a good story, go read the manga of this series. Much better plot

Always loved this show! It's not meant to be taken seriously and is rather entertaining if you take it for what it is. I say give it a try if you like .hack in any capacity.
An issue I have with this site's reviews is that they're nearly all negative except for very specific genres/series. >_> |

Incestuous soap-opera really has become a go-to generic time-filler in anime, hasn't it? And this show was years ago now.

Hotaru is actually also in the second AI BUSTER novel's final story, connecting it to the rest of the story. The manga, that is. As far as I'm concerned, the anime doesn't exist.

Lol, thank you for ripping this thing to pieces. I hated episode 01 so much. I would've given it a much lower grade....but I couldn't get past that 01 so...........yeah.

I would say to the reviewer that the story makes clear this is a new version of The World (I believe they call it r:2). Much of the old data was lost in a major system crash, and the remnants were put together with new content. This would explain what you call the inconsistencies. Also, keep in mind that hack sign had inconsistencies too, because there were remnants of older data from the original version of the World co-existing with the newer, released version. Aura herself was one such remnant.
Inconsistency is the name of the game with all the hack franchises, with old data interfering with new data to both good and bad effect. If you didn't understand that about hack sign or legend of the twilight, it's a cinch you won't get it with the other hack series either. Hey, it's not like real-life MMORPG games don't have plenty of inconsistencies as new patches and updates are released and bugs are fixed. I just encountered thois with Runes of Magic. A list of quests for Rorazan included a mysterious quest which apparently no longer exists..the current questline goes from A to C. I don't consider the chaotic overlap between old and new data in the hack franchises to be confusing at all. And it MAKES the story in most cases. |

LotT isn't R2. R2 is the "second season" stuff, with Roots and GU. This is still the original World from SIGN and the games, hence why the exact same characters with the exact same avatars are in it.

Or as I once liked to call it, ".hack//Legend of the Twincest Bracelet". Don't really remember too much from when I watched it back in '08 or so. Still, I'm willing to torture myself with it again, if I decide to go completionist and pick up Funi's release.
