I remember listening to the Anime World Order podcast reviewing this anime. Thanks to anime fans in America, my listening comprehension has improved a lot. I can't thank them enough.
I love the fact that none of the characters in this show are sexualized. If you like Yakitate Japan, I highly recommend you check out Mister Ajikko. |

I'd speak at some length about why Yakitate!! is one of my absolute favorite anime comedies, but I already did so last month, so anyone interested can just go there.
Granted, I think the main difference between me & Nick is that I'm an unabashed fan of dumb puns & referential humor, so take that into consideration. Anyway, I think the best part of this series (either manga or anime) is the fact that, among all of the zaniness & shonen ideologies, there's a lot of cool info regarding the science of baking bread. You don't just get hungry for bread by watching this show, but you also feel like you're really learning something, and I think that's just awesome. Also, on a highly personal level...
..And it is amazing. "To All Tha Dreamers" is still one of my all-time favorite anime EDs, and the footage it has is just so entertaining to watch. Anyway, I'm so happy that Right Stuf brought this show over, and I look forward to watching the rest as it comes out (I have the 2nd set, so I'll be returning to it soon). Such a well-written review. Nick paints such a vivid picture of what Yakitate!! Japan is like that I can confidently say that I wouldn't much like it if I saw it. It's not that I hate such shows, I just don't find them all that amusing. Which is great, because now Nick has saved me both time and cold hard cash.
So thank you for your help, Nick. |

I just don't get how the score for art/animation is dreamed up. I mean the show is what years old, but that aside I don't think the actual quality of the animation is poor, nor do I think there is any issue with the style itself.
I mean what exactly must happen with a show to merit a high score in those categories, does it have to be something over the top like Gankatsuou? Great show by the way. Also I would give the show a little more credit, as pretty much every food show since has copied/homaged whatever you want the over top reaction to food, with Shougeki no Souma being a recent example. In fact any one that likes one, will probably like the other. Also it features one of the great clowns of anime, Pierrot Bloneze, who can make a 1000 children smile at the same time, and its because he is a clown. Although I guess that is in part 2. |

Great review, and excellent insight. I will pick this up very soon. Nice puns as well, Nick.

I dropped this series in both anime and manga form. I wish I hadn't.

Despite its flaws, this is by far the best baking/cooking show to date.
Such projects are true rarity, and I would trade, say, few dozens of the damn slice of life/school club anime for another one like this. Another, dramatically weaker show is Yumeiro Pâtissière. There were few other bakery shows, but they were much smaller. And there is currently ongoing Food Wars show -- though it is not about baking exactly, it is still related to cooking. |
