Following this conversation (subscribers only), I've started work on an ANN User Manual.
The first portion is of course, the phpBB manual, which is mostly cut & paste from the original, but it will require some editing for portions of the forum that ANN has modified. You can see the current draft here: /ann-manual/.87317. The most important part for me to replace is the registration & login parts, since we've completely replaced those. I'll need to add portions for ANN's internal link treatment, as well as greenlinks... I'm open to suggestions about what else should be added or changed. Is that a link to the subscriber forum, or perhaps the staff forum? I cannot view it because I have not been "granted special access." The link to the draft of the manual does work for me. This idea of a new ANN manual sounds great to me. I doubt that I can contribute anything but I am definitely interested in it. |

@Touma
You didn't miss much in that Subscriber thread. RogerLP and I were asking if a manual could be provided to explain forum functionality in a single location. Currently a lot of tips and instructions are spread around and some things are just not explained. What Tempest provided is helpful already and I'm looking forward to seeing what was modified. It is probably significant that the three people showing interest in this are among the oldest in the forum. |

I tried creating something like this way back in the dark ages of 2009. I was hoping that the ANN community would get involved and pitch in to help. I wanted it to be a one-stop place for users to learn how to use the site better. It was a good idea but only nobahn seemed to care about contributing to it, and so the project never took off.
Such a shame. |

Within 4.2.1: Posting Form there is a paragraph regarding Signatures which I guess should be removed as ANN does not allow them. I'll have a more in depth read through at a later date.

And that has been very helpful. I suspect the problem is that your thread got more traffic from people who needed to learn than from those who had anything to contribute. I think what we are looking for here is something that would consolidate all the instructions around the forum. Also with the idea of documenting those things that regular users take for granted which may not be so obvious to new comers. |
