Well, at least they're trying. They couldn't do this in the 80's to the 90's, when everyone who watched anime came to the conclusion that Japan will break the robot barrier when they actually create a living robot. But...that hasn't happened yet. Probably not for another 50 years.

I think it will be generations more before there are robots that can function with little difficulty in rescue missions. The first robot in the Ladder Challenge didn't even advance beyond the first step.

It might be a while before it's of any use, but this sounds really fun.

This is something I actually would support if asked to invest my money in it.

I bet the secret task they're withholding from the competitors is that these robots need to preform these tasks with minimal charging. Because, damn! If these machines need to do all these things, they'd better freaking last. I would not be surprised this robot competition was inspired by the new movie, Chappie. Because this sounds like something America would like to make real. These things would either have to have good situational AI or long distance remote controls, like the rovers that are on Mars or the one on the meteorite. I would be worried if I had to put my creation into the field without full knowledge that it'll survive on it's own.
Best of luck to the competitors and I hope they televise this on SyFy or something. Because the world would like to see this become a reality- or not. It's just what I would like to witness. Don't shoot me for saying this- But I welcome our new robot overlords. |

I don't know. The movie seems to portray the robots as easily hackable, easily beaten, and with crazy guys mucking them up everywhere. Also extremely expensive to make. (Honestly though the movie had a lot of other, non-robot related problems. Actually, no, they were all robot related problems, when you get down to it. But that's just my opinion) Honestly, I don't think the US government would want the hassle when they can just hire more guys at minimum wage. |
