I understand the outcry, but where was this level of protest when the live-action Attack on Titan was "yellow-washed"?
Not to mention that the reasoning for this was covered, iirc in a past ANN article. Just seems a little cherry-picking-y to me. |

That's an example of hypocrisy, complain about Hollywood whitewash, but never complain when Japan does something similar (like your live-action Attack on Titan example) and also not justifying this Hollywood whitewash. It's the same thing when Hollywood remake Asian films, and yet ignore when Japan, South Korea, or Hong Kong/Mainland China does something similar like remaking Hollywood or European films. This is stupid for numerous reasons. The key one being the movie will likely not be set in Japan.

I think the simple reason for that is no one expects that movie to be any good at all anyways. As for this, if the movie's not going to be set in Japan then why bother making the Major Japanese? No one cared when they made Keiji Kiriya a white American in Edge of Tomorrow. Last edited by Oneeyedjacks on Tue Feb 17, 2015 12:09 am; edited 1 time in total |

The image of a mob of white Americans screaming that Japan isn't casting a white person for a Japanese film genuinely disturbs me because I picture it in the style of a white nationalist meeting. |

I personally don't have a problem with the casting. I mean I am assuming this adaptation is going to change the setting and names of the characters which I don't think is a big deal. I mean I think Hollywood certainly needs to employ more actors of color in general but I don't think that just because it's based on an anime means that the lead always has to be Asian all the time.

This woman looks familiar --- Lucy?
I'm not really a fan of live action movies based on anime---- but as long as the acting is good then it's fine either way The recent live action movies of Kenshin were pretty good actually |

People have explained why this comparison is illogical and dumb many times already, mdo7. |

So is Power Ranger a whitewash according to your logic (if it is, then why did the Japanese dub it). Why is it wrong for Hollywood to remake Asian film, but it's OK for Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong to remake Hollywood films? |

Fedora: But, if he wants to hear it again, then here goes. Japan's film industry does not have Hollywood's budget, and does not have a neighborhood of white people who speak the language which it can just drive down to for casting purposes-as is the reverse case here.

Jeez, people will bitch about literally anything. Seeing as the American version will most-likely be set in America, Major Kusanagi could be renamed and played by a woman of any ethnicity. However, seeing as the United States is a country that's over 60% white and the movie will mostly be targeted at a white male demographic, it makes the most business sense to attach a white woman who has been proven to draw in said demographic. Maybe they could meet the whiners halfway and cast Michaela Conlin from Bones. She's hotter than ScarJo, anyway.

On the other hand, everybody wants Hollywood to pander to them. Of course, it's absurd either way: almost everybody has a full-body prosthesis, so there's little inherent reason for the actor to be any particular race(and the odds of any Asian actors they nab being the right Asians are woefully slim - you could easily end up with a leading cast of every race but Japanese). |

Because Hollywood is going to place white people in the lead role when America is not 97+% white like Japan is Japanese (more like 99+% when you're including all Northeast Asians). There's barely any acknowledgement that Asians do in fact reside here and have for over a century and a half. Like that Fresh off the Boat sitcom is supposed to be some big deal because it even dares to have Asians on TV.

Well, I understand in a broad sense, but Major has an artificial body, so it can really look like just about anything and I outside of maybe the Oshii films, there was nothing particularly "Asian looking" about her artificial body.
