That makes the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise seem tame in terms of the number of anime series.

Considering how sour the performance of Duel Masters was in the U.S. (as a result of being mishandled), I have no hopes of seeing DM: Versus Revolution ever making it to the U.S. anytime soon. Sad

Localization aside, it probably couldn't handle the popularity that Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! had/still do in this country.

The card game apparently got rebranded Kaijudo and is selling again. A dude who works at my card shop apparently said it's really fun and balanced. I vaguely remember liking a Duel Masters game as a kid and had a few cards, but it really is just clearly trying to cash in on Yugioh.

I'd say that a Yu-Gi-oh! World Championship winner is a Duel Master.

Yu-Gi-Oh!'s popularity is starting to dwindle in recent times, from what I hear. I believe it was attributed to the lack of wide television exposure it had in previous years, making sales more in line of "hobby" status. I'd have to find the report, but I know for certain sales were down comparable to years prior.

Unfortunately, given how hard it is to get anime on television today, even if Hasbro was interested in bringing back Kaijudo or Duel Masters, it's rather unlikely they'd be able to get a network that would give the series the exposure and push needed to get the franchise back on track. Yu-Gi-Oh!'s in a bit of a tight spot right now as well, due to the way Nicktoons has been handling Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal's airing. In fact, they've had to go the online only route for the premieres, because of this (as well as the Vortexx shutting down).

At this point I'd consider Duel Masters to be an impossible franchise to re-introduce into the west. If you start from the beginning, you've got 15 years of material to go through. If you start from where Hasbro initially left off, you've got 10 years to catch up on ... You can't really start with what's on right now in Japan due to legacy issues with both the TCG and anime. Hasbro tried to revamp the brand, but Kaijudo was a flop so I'm not sure they'll be eager to do that again.

That's because most of the Duel Masters series get rebranded after a year.

I couldn't care less if it gets a dub. I lost interest in cards games a long time ago.

But if it DOES get a dub, and a bad one at that, I just wanna see the reactions. Anime hyper

Without the hokey tongue-in-cheek dub, there is absolutely nothing that appeals to me about Duel Masters. It's an extremely bland/generic franchise in a sea of bland/generic franchises and thankfully the English dub at least made it memorable

I disagree. Bushiroad's TCGs are doing just fine in the English speaking world. The difference between Bushiroad's franchises and other franchises though is that Bushiroad has realistic expectation and has no problem marketing to niche audiences. Part of the reason the original Duel Masters, and the recent Kaijudo reinvention, failed is because Wizard of the Coast is one of the more consumer unfriendly companies out there. From what we've been told Kaijudo was doing 'fine', but it was still axed. I assume WOTC wasn't satisfied with just 'fine' and they wanted something to compete with Yu-Gi-Oh so when that didn't pan out they just axed it rather than accept their smaller but still profitable fanbase. They seem to subscribe to "go big or go home" mentality. It's why I generally don't trust Wizards of the Coast's management when it comes to products like this

Yu-Gi-Oh series last between 100 and 250 episodes. Duel Masters series last only about 52, one year, so there's more of them. If you go by the episodes Katta has been the star in, he's currently at 194, though a few of those series were made up of 10 minute episodes so it's a bit less if you go by 30 minute segments.

As for declining sales, it makes sense. Action animation, which is what anime is, is dead on TV these days and networks don't want to touch it anymore.

Also a big difference between the American and Japanese market is the American market is less accepting of change. To a lot of people, Yu-Gi-Oh ended when Yugi was no longer the star. In Japan, changing the main character every series is common practice in a lot of their franchise media. So in Japan characters from GX, ZeXal, and Arc-V are being push and popular, but in America it seems people only care about Yugi and his gang. After Duel Monsters the popularity dropped in the west because of it. Looking at the booster packs, the American version drops the series-specific logo, such as ZeXal and ARC-V, in favor of a generic "Yu-Gi-Oh" label. Even in terms of marketing you can see them use Yugi or appeal to nostalgia for the first series where as in Japan they use recent characters from the current series.

And both have already been in national decline. There's no room for a 3rd one. America has gone past thru its card phase back to niche.

    This is ironic, because Green Bay isn’t the city most people associate with hobby gaming, it’s Seattle, where the metro area is the headquarters for industry leader Wizards of the Coast, a wide range of other hobby game companies, gaming show Pax Prime, and video game companies as well.

    Backup quarterback Matt Flynn attributed interest in Catan in part to the lack of entertainment alternatives in Green Bay, but perhaps the mental exercise and experience at strategizing will help the Packers overcome the Seahawks, who are 7.5 point favorites in Sunday’s game. If the Packers prevail, expect locker rooms around the NFL to become home to more Catan fanatics.

    The Packers’ Catan hobby has also spread to fans, who are mobbing Pat Fuge’s Gnome Games stores in Green Bay to buy the game they’ve heard the Packers talk about, according to the report. The sales spike started when tight end Justin Perillo mentioned the team’s Catan games on a radio show, and it’s spread from there. Fuge supported the craze with store signage and bigger inventory, and was rewarded with double his normal December sales on the game.

    We feel this is a trend that should spread, and the best way for that to happen would be a Packers victory on Sunday, so from our headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin, we say, “Go Pack Go!”
