This is apparently highlights from a 1993 live-action superhero show called Denkou Choujin Gridman. This show was re-cut into "Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad" in the USA, which is why some of the mechanical design was vaguely familiar to me.

That toy-scale screws and such could be seen on the combining robot parts was the most clever thing about this. Otherwise it was just someone nerding out about a show he presumably liked as a kid.

I like that the person watching the highlights was actually the villain's main assistant from the original show. And that ending seems to be either a pilot or a message. Or maybe both.

It's a reference to something called Gridman Sigma.

As the original Gridman was coming to an end, a sequel series titled Gridman Sigma was planned. The show would have featured the antagonist from the first Gridman show redeeming himself and using the powers of Sigma, Gridman's brother. For whatever reason the show was never made, but a Sigma suit was already made (it's just a recolored Gridman with a couple of new bits) and the story was continued as a photo comic.

So, yeah, that transformation at the end was a hardcore obscure reference.

I hope we get a few more tokusatsu turned into shorts like this at some point. It's always so interesting when they get the anime treatment.

Remember hearing of that. Guys said if Sigma happened, we would've got a second season of "Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad".
