Not bad. I quite like having a quick rundown on the new releases.
One suggestion for an addition though. I think it might help, especially with an unknown quantity like Fantastic Detective Labyrinth, to include some info on the creators and studios, in the way that is done in the news articles. You know, " From Anime Studio!, Directed by So-and-so (This, That, The Other Show) with designs by Someone (Maybe You've Heard Of) ...I mean, I guess you could nfer something about the show if you know it was done by the director of Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok, Tactics, Jing: King of Bandits... and four years of Cookin' Idol Ai! Mai! Main! BTW... is there any news as to whether or not Castle of Cagliostro will later get a Blu-Ray release? I believe Japan has put one out, it seems strange that even Eastern Star (Discotek) would withhold a BD release on something with such a profitable pedigree. I like the new format, Bamboo. I appreciate more releases covered each week, as well as price points and links to previous reviews. At the same time, I'm glad you kept the longer reviews of highlight series, because I enjoy reading your perspective. It looks very good. Hopefully this new year will be full of more changes for the better. I am still a little puzzled why the 'Rental' shelf is still a category, only because I can't think of any real places left in my corner of the world where you can actually rent anime in the physical form. Maybe I live in an Anime Desert, maybe not. It makes more sense to me to change 'Rental' to 'Stream Worthy' if a release is not worth owning outright, but still worth the experience.
Just my two cents, anyway. Keep writing this great column! |

New format is cool. You may continue. Other users will likely chime in on what they'd like to see different, but it seemed weird that ANN didn't have a regular rundown of DVD releases.
With the new streaming reviews Shelf Life doesn't need to cover that part of the industry. Can't get enough Gurren Lagann. I might actually buy a disc after years of avoiding them. |

I like the new format with the quick rundown of new releases. I had no idea that Amazon even had an exclusive set for the One Piece collections. Have no plans to ever get it as I already own all the regular versions of the collections, but it's cool to see.
They usually have a news post with all the new anime/manga releases and some other type of releases as well such as art book or video game releases. Usually on Tuesdays. Example: animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-12-30/north-american-anime-manga-releases-december-28-january-3/.82765 |

I have to say I was impressed with my Index season 1. I didn't think it would be as good as it turned out to be. I had much better character depth and relations than I thought it would. So it's nice to hear season 2 seems to continue with the quality for the most part. I do have to watch Railgun first though before I go onto season 2. Plus now that I got season 1 from a friend on dvd I want to watch the dub version and see how it compares to the sub version.

I don't mind the new format, but it would be nice if the reviews were at the top and the rundown of releases at the bottom, since that is what I am more interested in as I can get the release information in plenty of other places.

The rundown is a good addition. I often have no idea what's coming out until I see an ad skin or something.

Agreed. The meat of the article is the reviews, so I would prefer to have that at the top. Especially for reading on a smaller screen device. If you want a hybrid, how about just a list titles and release dates at the top that link further down the page to the full info (synopsis, review etc). Dropping the stream was a good choice though, while I enjoyed reading Bamboo's opinion on that content too, it seems like there's enough info for most shows considering the episode by episode reviews.

Tantei is an unknown quantity because its pretty old, I was suprised this got a release that late in the game.
That said, its not bad, I think its more dependent on an overall plot versus the crime of the episode style shows. Its closer to shows like someone mentioned Loki or Detective Academy Q where there are "cases" but they are secondary to overall conspiracies that drive the plot. That said I think it has one of the best ending themes (Dakishimete). |

Castle of Cagliostro is coming to Blu-ray in North America early this year (I'm guessing March~April). The DVD happened to be done earlier, is all.

I'm super excited to see Labyrinth get released over here; I wouldn't really call it old, however (it ran from 2007-2008). I've thought about watching the fansubs numerous times, but I'll simply buy the DVD set. As for why TRSI picked it up, Shawne Kleckner admitted at the AX panel that it was simply a show that he discovered not long ago, found really enjoyable, & felt that it was sadly ignored when it came out. I love it when companies license stuff like that, and I'll always support that kind of business. I do know of the opening theme (Monochrome), though, & it's honestly one of my all-time favorites. |

I think Rental is still a good category. I think it signifies that the release is just okay, but not anything special. You can still rent anime at the library or borrow from a friend, but you are right that there aren't too many places where you can rent anime :/ |

Is there still going to be a North American Releases post, or is this going to take the place of the DVD/BD side of that? I do rely upon that to keep me up to date on what is available on physical media week to week, so if I have to pay attention to this column instead (not that I don't read this, I do every post) it would be nice to know.

I meant old in the sense that these days, if an anime isn't picked up usually within a few months to a year of release in Japan it basically almost never gets picked up. Then again we also got the announcement of Yakitate Japan this year finally coming to the US as well, so it was a pretty good year for "older" shows. Actually another show you could compare it to that came out this year on dvd in the US is Psychic Detective Yakumo. |

I like the idea of releasing shows from that 06 through 09 period when licenses weren't being issued for every show and streaming hadn't yet been put into place. I think even mediocre to bad series stand a higher chance of finding audiences now thanks to just general availability. Although it's tough to gauge numbers when MAL keeps adding new members constantly, so something like H2O which may have had numbers in the teen thousands are more 50k now. That's also due to it being 7 years later. There's tons of examples, like Mokke, Mushi-Uta, Gigantic Formula, Demonbane, Good Witch of the West, Prism Ark, Shining Tears X Wind, Hatenkou Yuugi and so on. They're not necessarily good or great anime, but they still exist in a limbo where fansubs are your only option. That's a limbo that rarely occurs anymore, and usually only with wild exception of notable series like Amagi and Hyouka. That's probably more to do with specific license restrictions than just falling through gaps haphazardly.
