I wonder if Philips really had a case or not. It comes off, to me at least, as the last move by a desperate company.

Nintendo gets hit with this sort of lawsuit all the time due to its nature as a company that creates weird stuff constantly. If some other company feels something Nintendo produced is remotely similar (especially if Nintendo's thing proves popular, and no pun intended), they could try to sue and hopefully either get some money out of it or get some patent ownership. It's not always desperate--sometimes, it's from patent-sitters whose money is earned entirely through winning lawsuits (such as when an Australian company that simply owns patents without making anything sued Nintendo over the Wii's wireless adapter), and sometimes, it's petty bullying mainly for intimidation (such as Universal Studios getting on Nintendo's case for using the word "Kong").

I forget where I read it, but Nintendo and Apple are the two technology companies that are the targets of the most lawsuits per year.
