I feel your pain! I reached the point a while back where something started to feel out-of-place if I walked into a store and that OST wasn't being played. Still haven't seen the movie. |

I can understand that a gaijin who has a smattering of Japanese only takes the term literally, but, to put it more precisely, the term 'mild Yankee' means a kind of lowbrow conservative lower-class people who live mainly in the country and small towns. The term has been coined by a Hakuhōdō staffer, and it reflects how advertising agencies and merchants, who want to palm products and services off on such country people, see them.
I also don't know whether the level of Japanology in the USA is now high. Dr Hirakawa Sukehiro has said that its peak had been about the middle of the twentieth century in Arthur Waley: A Translator of The Tale of Genji, if I remember correctly, though. ｗ |

Try working at a preschool like I do. Frozen, every single day, multiple times, because the children request it. I liked the movie (though found one very spoilerific element disappointing) and I even liked the music - but after listening to it a hundred times, I've grown to absolutely loathe that soundtrack, especially "Let It Go" and the way the singer EMphaSIZes the SYLLaBBLE~~~~~~S!! on the chorus. Also, everybody sings it like it's this awesome empowerment song as opposed to Elsa running away from her problems and locking herself into an even more isolated containment than her parents had forced her into because she still hates herself... |

Lessee, according to Wikipedia, among the descriptors of a mild Yankee there's: 1.) Likes EXILE (think star of GTO drama) 2.) Low-level education, low pay 3.) Large percentage of them are "parasite singles" 4.) Large percentage of them get married due to unintended pregnancies, and there's a tendency for them to give their kids weird names. 5.) A lot of them drink and smoke. Yes, the fact that this demographic live in exurban areas adds to their novelty, but one can agree that people can view these behaviors as mildly delinquent. |

Big (issues) in Japan, 2014.
In an informal count and analysis, I found: A whopping 13 terms are related to gender, women and/or sexism. About 9 terms concern politics or politicians (both international and domestic). 7 terms are about entertainers or from entertainment, 6 terms are from the sports scene. 4 have to do with the military. 4 with controversies, especially public figures lying. 3 are related to economics 3 are about diseases/disease awareness 3 concern major current international issues (Isis, Ebola, the Umbrella Revolution) About 2 concern long term domestic concerns (2025 problem, disappearing cities), 2 are about weather, 1 is about cooking Not sure how to categorize "mild Yankee"--marketing term, or domestic social issue? I don't understand "dangerous drugs" enough to categorize it-is it about illegal drugs or prescription drugs? In any case, Gender Issues and sexism clearly won this year! |
