Okay i just bought otaku no video last night and watched it 2WICE! The circle was like a PRE-Genshiken! They super appriciate anime and all the special effects and animation quaility unlike people i know and hear that only likes (shiny) anime.

I LOVED IT AND GOT SOME OF THE OLD SCHOOL REFS!

My question is do you think that another updated otaku no video could be made? with maybe an orignal story of otakudom!

The charts and graphs are probably outdated now. It HAS been 20+ years and otaku has changed since then right?

The interviews was a good bonus that i would have expected to be dvd extras but its a part of the ova. But one seemd like his otaku lifestyle was an embarrassing past and one is nostalgic about it but has no friends and the other were just similar to people i know except for VHS guy whos probably DVD guy now.

Are they're really otaku embarrassed or regretful of their past. Also do people ever stop being otaku.

I also found the ova inspiring. How two guys can take their fandom and turn it into a business. a very sucessful one. Even when they lost everything they got back up and try something new and was successful. It verified my dream to do a doujin to sell at katsu or otakon! Maybe once i join the animation class next year ill make a flash animeish thing.

One more reason i love this....LUM COSPLAY!

so what did you all think of it?

First off, it hasn't been 20 years since Otaku No Video was made...Otaku No Video is an early 90's anime, I think actually '91. Secondly, you missed the best part of the anime and that's the fact that it actually tells the story of how GAINAX(the studio that made it) came to be. Sure it's not spot on and is actually exagerated quite a bit at points but the basis of fans starting their own studio and doing what they love is there. The best part for me was the naming of the companies they started in the anime. Grand Prix was the anime version of General Products(actual company that many founding members of GAINAX started before creating GAINAX) and then of course GiantX is GAINAX. Best part is that GAINA is actually a Kanji character that means giant, so essentially GAINAX is GiantX(In reality, when creating GAINAX they only added the X at the end to make it sound more giant robotish). Anyways, this is one of my favorite anime's mainly because it tells the story of one of my favorite studios.

Also, the documentary parts are scripted. It was meant to be kind of a mockumentary as well with that. Those were some of the funniest parts of it as well...Now I feel like watching again.

This OVA is very special to me, since I was the screener projectionist for the 16mm print before it's Japanese release. Gainax had brought this film (along with an insane number of other 16mm prints) to Animecon 91' a couple of months before the VHS release date. Being a huge fan of film (despite it's poor audio quality) this is still one of my all time greatest memories. I still have dreams of playing all the 0080s on 16mm. We played Otaku no Video in the middle of the night/morning not knowing what it was. It really spoke to the half dozen of us in the room who were a part of the first anime convention in the US.

Otkau Video reminds me of all the other good times from the convention like having lunch with Sadamoto (this was before Evangelion was made) and talking about Nadia. He told us that Sanson and Hanson were modeled after the Blues Brothers. The cocktail party with the Gainax staff also was memorable since the Gainax guys got really drunk and started throwing people into the pool! Ah, the good old days...

Otaku no Video is my favorite anime mockumentary (also the only anime mockumentary I've seen). I love all picking at all the references but also enjoying the entertainment quality. It was pieced together really well and never tried to take itself seriously which is what I was expecting before I saw it. But it was never pretentious and was instead usually fun. I'm thinking of watching it again just writing about it.

I don't think this one needs to be remade, but I wouldn't say no to watching something else in the same style, but it would be hard to use the genre in anime and keep it entertaining. I think what really helped OnV was that the live action sequences and interviews helped balance out the animated portions.

Otaku No Video is fantastic and a shining example of how good parody anime can be.

It's always so much fun trying to find the subtle references to past anime series. I'd also recommend Project A-ko and Assemble Insert which are littered with parodies and references to vintage anime series. Both of which are also high energetic comedies that fans of Otaku No Video will love.

The only exceptional parody anime to not be released in the US would be Blazing Transfer Student which was also released in 1991 by Gainax. [/url]
