Think Crunchy will do the cool thing, and let Funi make a dub?

I wonder what Crunchy's reply will be. They don't seem like the type of people to hold the license hostage, but I but I find it interesting how they even have home video rights to Free!

I hope that Funi will release this DVD with the unaired episode that the 7th DVD in Japan is going to get... if not, then that's really sad =(...
I do hope they get the 1st season too... it's still very awkward to release the 2nd season before the 1st... =/

I take it this is a first for a sequel series getting a US release and dub, but not the original?

Well, we did get Char's Counter Attack over here before we got Zeta Gundam or Double Zeta Gundam.

Yes! I will totally be pre-ordering the BDs. I hope we get the extra episode, too.

I'd imagine it would be something Crunchyroll would *want* to do. After all, they stand to make some cheddar off this if they play it right. The problem is *can* they? I'd imagine ABC Asahi, KyoAni, and the Iwatobi Swim Club Production Committee would still have a say in the matter. While I don't think they'd object to the matter, there's always that chance.
Also, there's the issue of non-US rights to consider. If they have full rights for the US, logic would dictate they have full rights to the series in every region they stream it. That might be a headache to iron out as well. Then again, I suppose if FUNimation can pull it off the rest of the world will follow suit.

Wait, so the reason why no one picked up Free is because CR got the rights? Wow. Anyway, I hope Crunchyroll are awesome enough to let Funi do a dub for Season 1. I'd hate to only get Season 2 dubbed.
But hey, at the least the worst case scenario of Sentai Filmworks dubbing the show has been ruled out. That would have been a nightmare.

Nothing to do with being cool. At the end of the day it will all come down to money.

Wow, first that Answerman question, and now Funi's dub announcement. What are the odds?

It's 2014. We should be well-past the point where anime gets dubbed out of order.

I didn't even know CR could get the rights to anime. I thought they were just a streaming site! Shows how much I know lol. Anyway, I hope CR let's Funi get season 1 too. But I'm sure if they make the dub to the second season great they'll let them dub the first season too. I'm not worried though. Funi gives us a lot of great dubs. I'm just wondering which voice actors will fit these swimming babies!

Ah, I see how it works. I guess that also explains why Wikipedia says Shugo Chara's distributor is CR even though they've done nothing with the license.
That certainly clears up a lot of confusion for me. I was always baffled as to why no one picked up Free. It's only now I've realised that the reason why is because it'd been picked up already.
I really do hope this works out though. After Chuunibyo and before Amaburi my opinion on KyoAni was gradually going downhill (Despite absolutely loving them for the first year or so I watched anime) but I really enjoyed Free regardless. It has that unique charm I used to love about KyoAni that Tamako Market, Chuu2 and KnK just didn't have. Weirdly enough, I was actually really skeptical about Free because I thought it would just be a shoddy K-ON ripoff (Like Tamako) with guys and a ton of manservice. But despite actually looking forward to the the other shows I mentioned Free was the only one I truly enjoyed.
I don't really care that the Tamako Market dub sucks and I doubt I'd get too worked up no matter how much Sentai screw up Chuu2 and KnK. But Free is the one show they've made in the past few years I want to be done justice. My opinion of them isn't always perfect but this is one of the cases where I feel I can trust Funimation to do it right.

Funi's blog post actually mentions and links to the Answerman column, citing it as the catalyst for the recent questions about CR's license.
