Eh, I feel like it raised some good points that I missed watching the show the first time around. And I actually loved the show! But I'm running on 6 hours of sleep over a 48-hour period, and a review this in-depth deserves my full attention to comment on it properly.
I will say that having the characters be more of ideas/archetypes than actual characters didn't really bother me, though I'm not sure why. Not being a fan of the original Gatchaman, it's not like I knew it was trying to deconstruct that series or anything. Eh, maybe I just liked being on that emotional rollercoaster. Plus, it reminded me soooo much of Tsuritama, which I also loved. Maybe I just really wanted something uber-positive in my life. |

I don't really agree with the show's outlook on technology, but I still really enjoyed it. I hope we hear an update on season 2 soon.

I still want this show, but I am peeved slightly at the lack of director's cut ending. If Sentai picks it up down the line I'll double dip, I guess. Hope season two is good.

Right, the characters aren't really characters in the most basic meaning of the word, they are just types. Which is fine, there is nothing with that. It works very well in this show, because it is an anime primarily about ideas and how they correlate to each other, it's not concerned about more conventional goals found in the genre. That said I agree that it suffers suffers from overwhelmingly naive and even self-contradictory beliefs about the internet. Hopefully, the sequel will have better thought out themes. |

No, I was reading it but I stopped once cross dresser Rui was called a "she" and then I remembered this was the same reviewer who thought A Channel was about grade schoolers. Prior to that, I was compiling a list of counterpoints from 1) Superheroes who are completely relatable worry me to 2) It's not "information should be free", the basic theme is more like "communication should be free" but got to that paragraph and realized its her so why bother? Surprisingly enough, this is one of the handful of dubs that I just can't get behind. I usually prefer watching dubs, but something about this one felt really...Off. Like the actors were too detached from the characters to actually become them. The acting wasn't horrendous or dull, and the emoting was fine, but there was no connection or chemistry. If that makes sense. Which is a shame because they had a lot of talented people in the cast. As the review suggests, it must have been the director's fault.
And I have to disagree about Jessica Calvello having one of the better performances. Now I love Calvello and her roles as Excel and Hanji, but she honestly comes off as a strange choice for Hajime to me and it didn't sound natural whenever she spoke. It's like that on every review site though. Most people just scroll to the bottom of the page just to see the score and then proceed to whine about in the comments if it doesn't match theirs. As for the show I still plan to give it a watch at some point even though it sounds like one those shows that really doesn't capitalize on its ideas. Thanks for the review! This was one of my favorite shows of recent years, in spite of the many flaws mentioned. It was hard to not be keenly aware of the show's ridiculous idealism while watching it, but I'm fairly certain the escapist nature is what made me love it so much. Despite the show's best efforts, it doesn't really match up to the real world all that well; even so, I feel like the world of Crowds would be an interesting one to live in.
That is a bit of a shame about the dub though, I was hoping it would be worthwhile. Still going to buy Sentai's release despite that and the lack of director's cut, but it'll be less enjoyable. Also, while the music was a bit overused (as mentioned in the review), I would personally rate it higher than a B. The catchy weirdness was unlike anything else, and coming from Taku Iwasaki that means something. He certainly seems to have had fun dabbling in dubstep  All I have to say is, thank goodness for CDJapan!

No, it's context plus the shower scene plus Hajime coming out and saying it plus X explaining why Rui was going around dressed as a girl... How is that not super clear? You needed just one more bit of confirmation? |

When I read in the review that this show argues that information should be free, I immediately thought of the scale of damage Wikileaks had done and would have continued to do if Julian Assange wasn't dealt with in time. (Even with him being a hypocrite aside.) Then I read in the comments about freedom of communication, and I thought of the incidents involving GameFAQs and 4chan and celebrity phone numbers.
Maybe if the world had no evil whatsoever, a utopia can come about with totally unrestricted access to any sort of knowledge. Then again, if the world had no evil whatsoever, any circumstance would be a utopia. It sounds like this is a love-it-or-hate-it show. That makes me curious about this now. I saw it promoted at Anime Expo, but there was no attempt to explain what this was about. I see now that it's not an easy show to describe, but without something to tell me if I'd like it or not, I'm not going to see it. |

Hm... it's a shame that this show aspired so much to such high-minded ideals and yet failed to really make any sort of real impact with them.
This review also made me understand why so many people disliked Hajime as a character: I was always under the impression that people hated her for being bubbly and optimistic (which is something I appreciate in these overly-cynical times). But seeing as how she's less a character and more "Check out how perfect and busty this girl is and ain't she a cute weirdo?!", I can understand the negative reaction. It's truly a shame, because the art alone for this show makes me want to jump right in--and I have a hard time connecting with this shows philosophy in light of recent video-game-related controversies. I'll check it out, but you can bet I'll only do so with some sort of discount. Thanks for the review, Hope. |
