Good to hear it doesn't dissappoint! I love Kodocha, and it's always really funny.
It stinks that they're are no extras except trailers. I miss the comentaires they had in the "Babbit Box (Vol. 1-6) DVDs! They were really fun to watch. But when they took those off, I basically stopped watching Kodocha extras.

I think my favorite moment on this volume was the faux-dramatiquè "sacrifice" that Tsuyoshi and Aya made on the bridge to avoid fighting each other in the battle of the sexes. It was a "laughing yet wanting to cry" moment.
I didn't care for the dub at all when I checked it out on the 1st and 2nd discs, but coming back to it now, the VAs sound like they've gotten into the swing of things with 30+ episodes in the books. I still don't like some of the style differences, particularly Laura Bailey as Sana--I agree that it's a technically good performance on her part, and I generally like her in other anime (Fruits Basket, Gunslinger Girl, and Negima!, mainly), but I've just liked the Japanese approach to the role better.
Volume 10 came in the mail today, and no extras on that one, either... Kodocha fans are in for a long, cold winter on the extras front, but for an older, longer series, it's not too surprising that Funi has exhausted their extras inventory.
Still kinda sucks about the audio/licensing issues, though. Apparently, eliminating the "7 'o Clock News" opener and all references to Tokio 7 wasn't enough, they have to drop the audio in any scenes that originally featured a slow/sad remix of the ill-fated opener. FUNi proved they could rescore it for the English audio track, but no, it just wasn't enough and now we have to watch relatively emotional scenes with no audio

It's not that it's an irrelevant point to bring up, because considering the time it was made in and all of that, its actually valid, but I'm not entirely sure you can realy strike "mediocre artistry' against something like Kodocha considering it's a big, merchandise spinning kids comedy-drama from the mid-90s for 8 year old girls. Just seems a little bit too snooty/unnessecary from where I'm sitting (I do say, the emotional pull from the more recent episodes of Recess do outshine Sesame Street in it's art and direction, since Sesame Street is so Passe as of recent).

Really? I found Laura Bailey to be a much better Sana than the Japanese VA. I just like her energy and voice more, I guess. The Japanese VA wasn't bad, though.
Kodocha is a great, great series and I'm so happy it's getting good reviews.

Same here. Laura Bailey is the reason I got into Kodocha in the first place. I've yet to hear a performance by her that I haven't liked.
One thing I always appreciate about Key's reviews: the dub gets a fair shake.
Kodocha is a wonderful series in my opinion. It can be absolutely hilarious as in this volume or it can tug at your heart strings and play you like violin, as in past episodes dealing with Akito's family, Sana's real mother, and even Rei's past. I'm troubled by the rumors floating about that sales haven't been as good as expected. I hope Funimation doesn't decide to pull the plug on Kodocha before it's completely out.
