I've started watching Shin Mazinger recently; it's my first proper exposure to the franchise. Halfway in (I'm on the Lorelai arc), the timeline for the backstory is a little wobbly, but I'm still loving the show. Not sure how much of that is the source material and how much is Imagawa doing his Imagawa thing.
Doesn't it have some of the Giant Robo trick of blending in characters from other manga by the same guy? I think I read that somewhere. Like, Tsubasa Nishikiori (aka Awesome Lady) is supposed to be based on someone from another Go Nagai manga. |

Violence Jack, iirc. Shin's more of a love song of Nagai's work in general. A fair bit of the plot itself is taken from things like Relic of Terror, written by Ken Ishikawa, Z Mazinger and in general, a lot of the sidestories while retaining the basic premise.
I personally find it more interesting that the whole in-game reason Mazinkaiser exists in F Final is because of exposure to Getter Rays, mutating it, which is even more hilarious considering how close Mazinger and Getter are always linked, both in terms of actual manga and anime and with the games themselves. Can't wait to see what they do with Z3's hints and whether or not we'll have another Kaiser situation. Last edited by Lynx Amali on Sun Sep 21, 2014 2:03 pm; edited 1 time in total |

A funny coincidence: I just watched Mazinkaiser SKL last night.
Aside from a few episodes of the original Mazinger Z watched out of curiosity, I'm new to the franchise. The old series is really hard to watch at this point, but SKL was great. I went ahead and started watching some of the Mazinkaiser OVA this morning, and that was also entertaining, starting off like the original Mazinger Z (with much more modern production values), but quickly changing things up. I'll be looking into more of this franchise soon. |

I first got into the franchise with Mazinkaiser, though at this point the overall favorite of mine would be Great Mazinger. Something about it made it the Mazinger for me. No continuation of Shin-Mazinger hurt me, as you can guess.

I haven't seen too much Mazinger, unfortunately, but I'm also a fan of the franchise. Out of what I've seen, I'd say my favorite is the Mazinkaiser movie, and I'm still slightly annoyed that ADV never brought that over alongside the OVAs. SKL was really fun, too.
Luckily, I do have Discotek's first boxset of Mazinger Z and I'll be buying both the second set & their release of Shin Mazinger, so I'm looking forward to those. |

Cool write up!
I got into the franchise with Mazinkaiser a few years back and still love it to this day. SKL was something of a disappointment, mostly because of how edgy it thought it was. Shin was great, so much fun. Cliffhanger still burns to this day. So glad Discotek is finally bringing that to the US. I have had a lot of trouble getting into the original series, it's so dated and routine. One of those shows I'm glad I can own, but maybe not one I'll be finishing anytime soon. |

All that, and nothing about the latest incarnation in Robot Girls Z? I thought that you were more thorough than that, Mike. ;p
Yeah, that too. ^^ |

I believe you misspelled 'pilder', unless it was intentional.

Oh yeah! Love that show. I saw that *long* before I had even heard of Mazinger, and it was a ton of fun. Once I'm better acquainted with the main franchise, I suspect a rewatch will be in order. |

Mike Toole, That was an Awesome article. I watched Tranzor Z when I was younger. I Love that Discotek is bringing the Entire Series to the US. While Great Mazinger hasn't been anounced, Shin Mazinger is another Must Buy. Grendizer, Gaiking, Getter Robo G, Danguard Ace are my Favorite Super Robot Series. Now I am a fan of Mazinger. I am glad to see articles like this, as I never tire of Super Robot Anime.

So, Mike, can we expect a Yamato column next? It being the 40th anniversary and all.

Glad someone finally gave Mazinger a better treatment the "review" of Mazinger's recent DVD release.

you cant be surprised by that. mazinkaiser to be frank is more popular than shin mazinger though die hard go nagi fanatics would say maginzer z. its was cause of how popular it was over the others that SKL was released as well. and to be frank , mazinkaiser & SKL is a lot more better than mazinger z and shin mazinger |
