It's the beginning of the end of those heady days of free streaming anime broken into small pieces:
http://www.macworld.com/news/2006/10/20/youtube/index.php Ha ha! Now you have to watch it on TV or buy it on DVD like the rest of us! Or... just DL it with your p2p programs... oh well. P.S.: Obviously that article is not referring directly to anime, but rather to all those clips of that 'crazy' Japanese television that people keep sharing on YouTube. Still, one thing could logically follow another here. |

not that big of a deal, the quality was bad, and most people already know how to get it other ways. This was just a matter of time. like I said on the other news site that I read, anyone who was following Googles buy out of youtube knew this was going to happen. The companies were already lining up to file lawsuites once they could have access to googles deep deep pockets. So I imagine google said it wanted this stuff gone or they wouldn't be buying. |

I'm fine with them taking fansubs down, but they even removed things like a 30 second clip from Zoids: Chaotic Century that was removed from the English version and some openings and endings (which I can understand, but its still disappointing).

I would imagine that someone still owns the copy rights to those also. Even if they wern't aired on TV here. |

Where have I seen this before 
By the looks of the article it doesn't seem like the end of anything really they said the did take out 30,000 files yet theres still quite alot of it on there still and it seems it may get protected by some lawsuite aimed at it...if it does end I'll have to download more illegal content on my computer...oh well.

I was just on youtube earlier today and didn't notice many AMV's or anime missing though I did lose 5 friends. Edit: was there targets only licensed material or were they really going after everything. |

The reason why Japanese YouTube deleted 30,000 videos is because the peolpe who uploaded them are pirates. But there is still free anime in the U.S. (as long as it's legal). Mabey the YouTube viewers should have TiVo if they want to watch missed episodes of their favorite shows.

I will openly admit that I personally contacted Funimation, ADV Films, and Anime Works about YouTube videos, linking them to specific dubs and what-not. I hope I had something to do with it.

Well it isn't licensed as far as I know...but they could be...who knows, all I know is they are there, though they might not be for very long.

In a decade or two this will probably all be tracked by backbone routers and corrupted mid-stream regardless of which sever is hosting it or where it originally came from. The dragnet is slow, but it's growing. Don't buy the "nobody owns the internet" argument. The internet's various backbones are owned by a handful of corporations who are increasingly tied to the will of the content providers. This new directive is coming from continuing threats of lawsuits, additional governmental pressure, and from having content creation divisions under the same corporate umbrella. New advances in encoding and encryption will eventually see the end of the easy copying we've all become accustomed to as a result of the internet revolution.
Instead, the internet will eventually be used to ensure content remains locked no matter who cracks what. Holes will be plugged with patches that are pushed without your knowledge or consent and the moment your favorite playback device can no longer speak with the security servers the whole thing will eventually lock-up. Sure, there will always be ways around most protections, but the work required to make it happen will be far beyond what most people are willing to go through and any single crack will not be applicable to more than a handful of hardware/software combinations. By the time you can find out how the crack works it will have already been patched. Enjoy what you have while you still can, because pixel-perfect copying will eventually become a thing of the past. |
