Man...I really want to upgrade to 4k but as a gamer the amount of power to run games at that resolution at good FPS is just insane. I hope as the TVs/monitors become popular, the price for GPUs will drop to allow normal people to run games at those resolutions. (PS4 and XB1 will explode trying)

Doesn't mean much for anime when they're barely approaching 1080p as it is. It's obviously much easier to get live-action 8K content when all you need is a camera and something to shoot, but with anime being drawn on paper and not made of infinitely scalable vectors, they're going to continue to lag behind.

Still waiting for Time Warner Cable's HD to actually be HD. Mine's a pixelated mess.

I think this is a good example of tech being way out ahead of popular demand. It's a good try at stimulating demand, but the existing markets worldwide are still not fully up to speed on the 1080p standard let alone ready for an upgrade cycle to start.

That's all the compression they have to do to fit 1080i + 5ch audio into the 6MHz bandwidth each channel is allocated with.
My understanding is that the Japanese government allocated 20MHz to each TV channel, which is why Japan can do 8K broadcasts.

It would be nice if they hit FullHD more often. However, since 2k (and hence broadcast 4k/8k) is an even multiple of both 720 and 1080, at least content can be upscaled more cleanly.

Barely? Paper? Huh? Just because they don't/rarely use vector imaging doesn't mean they use paper.

Of course they still use paper, you've never seen any genga? Maybe a rare few do some drawing on tablets, but keys are mostly drawn on paper and then scanned.

If it's still done on paper then why can't they just scan at higher resolutions?

Is there really a need. Guess they are preparing for the future. Still seems a long way away. 4K is still new.

@ qashairy
More like as soon as they can start putting out BDs in that resolution; interestingly, there are still some productions they only put out on DVD(and only one of TWC's 'adult' channels was HD).
@ dtm42
It takes more than higher scan resolutions to create higher resolution shows; most importantly, higher-resolution(pricier) monitors(and by the time you get to 8K, the 96 DPI model breaks down, so you get extra software headaches to boot!).
@Time Warner Cable
During the brief time I worked retentions for them, I found out they were removing some "analogue" channels in their lower tiers and were replacing them with digital channels(the kind that need a converter box, IIRC) precisely to create more bandwidth. I don't think that should affect (switched)digital tier cable all that much, unless those "analogue" channels take up more room than I thought.

It's preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Japan wants to showcase their technology.
