Nearly after 2 years, this movie will finally debut. I have mixed thoughts on this PV though.

Why? Why must it be CG? Eh, whatever. I might be able to put up with it if the story is good enough.

Finally. Been waiting for this for a while. I've got no problems with the CGI. I like the music and character designs, and the fight scenes look cool .

CGI looks awful!
My God. WHY?! Why did they do this? It could have been a good movie.

Just a question of curiosity, but what do some of you consider "good" CG animation produced in Japan?
I don't watch a lot of modern anime these days so maybe I missed some good ones.
Using computer-aided tools is the norm in Japanese animation production these days, but I'm sure most of the concerned are talking about the movement and appearance of 3D animated characters and/or objects in Japanese animation production.

I don't have many issues with cgi, but FF7 Advent Children has probably some of the best CGI I have seen. Spirits Within as well, but as that one's also made by Americans I don't know if it counts. Judging from trailers the Harlock movie looks impressive, as does the Saint Seiya one. Black Rock Shooter has some awesome fight scenes, and all are full CGI.

Ugh i really wish the japanese CG studios would stop cutting the frame rate on the CG. It never looks good. It looks choppy and awkward especially since it takes more effort to remove the frames in the first place. A lot of that character animation looked stiff and awkward which it shouldn't since one of the plus sides of CG is automatic inbetweens but nope. The action scenes look nice but that character work looks really iffy. I don't get why this approach is used so much. Why try and replicate the pitfalls of 2D anime as well when you don't have to. It looks really weird. Harlock went the other way and looked good for the most part. The Naruto games have way better CG than this and they only try to emulate the high framerate action of 2D using smears, squash and stretch and everything. This just looks ... *sight*

Hi Kevinx59,
I agree that those CG productions you mentioned are amazing, not to forget the amazingly high budgets that accompany such incredible productions, naturally because the technology required for rendering such realistic CG animation is expensive, but with great results.
I believe the concern of some people here with this production is less about the style of animation (Realistic CG vs Cell-looking CG), but with the movement of the animation with CG characters and/or objects.

Hello daichi383,
Yes, I agree. I think you are on to something!
The animation in general from the trailer looks good in my opinion, but my eyes were drawn to the lower frame-rate of the "movement" animation (scripted CG movement of a 3D object), which causes a distraction to the human eye I believe. I don't believe this is a limitation of the technology because it's been done well in other production. However, I think it's simply a matter of cost that comes with rendering more frames. It's a shame really, because simply adding more frames to the movement would make it so much better.
I would be curious to know what the budget is for a move production like this in Japan. Of course, no where close to Disney/Pixar budgets I'm very sure.

I guess i can understand if its to do with costs of rendering more frames but still it is disappointing.

Cant wait! Character designs look great in the finished product. It's been stated that it would be in CG for almost a year, why are people complaining now?

Looks alright. Want to check this movie out. No idea what the wait on it might be, that is if someone brings it to the west at all.

The 12fps CGI "trend" needs to stop. I understand that they are trying to match the speed of traditional animation, but traditional animation gives the illusion of higher speed motion. The movement would look much better and less stiff if they were running at 24fps.

I'm complaining because the CG character animation doesn't look good. I already knew it was gonna be CG but Toei's CG unit doesn't usually cut frames like this.
