I was watching Kiddy Grade and I think I heard the opening and ending in English. Is it just me or was it really in English because when I heard the full song it was in Japanese?

were you watching on DVD? because FUNimation does that sometimes

Well sometimes they will do a song in english like in the case of bleach...there aren't that many though. I've never seen Kiddy Grade so I wouldn't know for sure.

Like the Blue Gender Funimation (and early MB Kenshin) release, you can toggle between languages for the songs. If you hit the angle button you can toggle between credits too. I wish the other companies would do this, since I really enjoyed the Japanese fonts used on Samurai 7.

The Kiddy Grade DVDs are set up the same way as the Blue Gender DVDs; in fact, at one point that was standard practice for FUNimation DVDs.

To clarify for those who don't know what I mean, when the Japanese dub is on, you'll hear Kiddy Grade's opener and closer in Japanese and see the original Japanese credits; when the English dub is on, you'll hear the songs in English and with the English-translated credits. (And yes, we're talking about genuine, full-fledged English here.) Personally, I like the opener better in English.

Fruits Basket is another popular FUNimation release that does this.

Bleach's songs are in Japanese and the series was licensed by Viz, not FUNi.

God, I didn't even know that option existed since I never watched the dub (I would have watched it, but I've heard Funi's older dub jobs weren't really the greatest, so I just decided to skip it...), so the first time I heard it was just a minute ago... Any idea who the singer is? It's obviously not Yuka...

Though I haven't been watching it in English, I know that both the opening and ending songs for Desert Punk also happen to do this. I found out when my DVD player accidently played the English dub.

FUNi's attempts to "Westernize" such songs is medicore at best.

I mean, it doesn't sound the same when some caucasian chick is singing パリジョナ大作戦 translated from Crayon Shinchan. You lose the feeling of the original that much more, because it doesn't sound as upbeat as the original. I mean, the FUNi chick sounds subdued and meek, comapred to the livelyness of the Japanese singer.

I will agree with Key on this one and say I enjoyed the alternate version. If it were the only version available I would be upset, but the Kiddy OP and ED were much better than most English versions of anime songs. The singer is a nice match for the original.

I am a bit biased for the Blue Gender song since Houko Kuwashima (who also plays Marlene) sings the original opening. I still can't believe that she can play the tough girl (like Kagura in Azumanga, Sango from Inuyasha, Bocca the main male character from Melody of Oblivion, or Nartarle from Gundam Seed) and the sweet kid (like little Hattie in Argentosoma, Quon from RahXephon, Satsuki-chan from X, or Doloris from ZOE) equally well. I seriously thought that she was two different VAs.

Before anyone asks, there is no full English version, they only dubbed the TV-size version.
The main problem with the English versions for me was the instrumentals - rather than using the Karaoke versions (I assume either due to the Japanese backing vocals or licensing issues) they re-recorded them and, particularily with Future, they just don't sound as good (Future for example loses that nice crisp snare sound and some bass riffs).
