Tezuka knew Kitty wasn't a cat.

Here is a reference for you young-ins that don't read Tezuka. http://tezukaosamu.net/en/character/616.html
I think I remember seeing that dude in Black Jack every now and again. Not surprised that Tezuka would do something like that really since he seemed to use his characters very often. |

This looks cute to me!
Osamu Tezuka was the best; I wish he had lived longer... |

I hope I don't ruffle too many feathers here, but this drawing of Hello Kitty isn't Osamu Tezuka's best work. And believe me,he's done some pretty good stuff. He must have been done it as a favor to Sanrio but I doubt that they would have been published that drawing. I wouldn't put it among his best stuff. That drawing looked like he was off the day he drew it.

If there was a plush of Hyoutan-Kitty, I would buy it in a heartbeat!

When the request came in, with Tezuka's workload, he likely just did the first thing that came to mind between working on chapters of Phoenix, Black Jack, and whatever other serializations he was publishing or animation projects he was working on. |

Who are you to say it isn't cute?

Yep, you're right on that. Every book that isn't gekiga related (his usual works) you could find that character in the corner of any panel. I often would pass the character over but I often wondered later on if there was any significance to the character. |
