So is Getbackers really that good? And if it is does it keep staying that way for the rest of the time?

It's kind of ironic that in your Vanilla Pleasure Night DVD review, you say that this show might not appeal to fans on MadTV, but if you look very closely on the DVD case, it says, and I quote, "A Japanese MadTV with a touch of naughty." I'm just sayin'..

I saw that as well, actually. Clearly, whoever wrote that has never seen MadTV. It's like saying King Kong is like Curious George with a touch of growth hormones, just because they both have monkeys.

This is completely unrelated but I had a dream last night that Bamboo appeared in for some reason. It was just a brief appearance though, nothing serious. I have no idea why I am mentioning this but I feel compelled to do so as I rarely remember my dreams anymore, but I remembered it the second I saw this...
Hmm, was expecting Moonphase to be in the perishables... Honestly I didn't really like it, and I heard it only goes downhill from where I stopped (only two episodes seen before I gave up on it...). I don't plan on buying Moonphase, but I do plan on buying the amazingly funny Pani Poni Dash! (worked on by the same people) when ADV releases it though.

I certainly wouldn't call it perishable... while it certainly starts of generic, it has plenty of quirky moments as the series goes on. It's not a stellar series, but I enjoyed it and am picking it up myself.

I agree with the review whole heartedly. Personnally I loved Getbackers. I think I liked it more for it's humor then action but both aspects were great. However the limitless fortress arc is the best part. After that arc in season two they go back to doing one or two episode quick missions. Then it's the return to the limitless fortress arc which was entertaining but incomplete (the manga had caught up to the anime I believe). So the series ended with some unresolved questions but it's still a great series.

Ha! I won a copy of Pani Poni Dash from the Anime on DVD Guessing Game contest a couple of weeks ago, so it's something I'm also looking forward to.
I saw MoonPhase at Harucon back in April and I though it was pretty good; good enough for me to buy the DVD when it becomes available, which I did last weekend. I didn't watch it yet because of college football and the World Series (as you can tell, sports takes precedence over anime in my household ), but I'm pretty much interest to hear Monica Rial's take on Hazuki quite honestly.
Why only three anime titles the week, Bamboo? |
Because my computer imploded and ate my entire column. I didn't have the time/energy to rewrite the whole thing, so you'll see those all next time.

Heh, for once I'm more looking forward to next week's column than this one. By "Godzilla," I'm assuming you mean Classic Media's release of the original 1954 film, and it'll be interesting to hear a viewpoint about it from someone who isn't either a crusty old film buff or a Godzilla fanatic from infancy, for once (myself falling well into the latter category).

Wait, shit, Moonphase is out already? And PPDash is close behind?
Jesus I'm behind.

I personally adore it, but Tsukuyomi has been getting nothing but hate from reviewers and other people I’ve discussed it with. It's nice to see Sakechan thought it was it least decent enough to warrant a rent, because I immediately assumed this was going to be in the perishable section when I saw this column's title. It's extremely cute, but it's not exactly the greatest thing in the world. (And I love randomly chirping "Nekomimi mode!" at people; it's one of my favorite anime catchphrases. )

There's one other reason I personally adore MoonPhase, and it's not just the nekomimi gothic lolita get-up (though it's about time someone produced a series based on that; now I don't have to rely on doujins). It's the trippy, eye-candy style this series employs, and anyone who has seen Petite Cossette or the Soultaker will recognize this. Not to mention there are some spiffy cinematographic shots like the cut-away view of the house and a few funny gags like the unexplainable dropping of pans. And PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO EACH OF THE OPENING SEQUENCES! It does change once in awhile with some of them being subtle while a few of them being REALLY drastic.
It's a feast for the eyes, but there is a solid story behind it especially once Volume 2 gets released.

I was expecting it to wind up there as well, given the fate of most cute/gimmicky/moe anime in this column. Even I thought that MoonPhase was pretty dumb, based on seeing the first episode awhile back...and my standards are low enough that I almost never drop anything after the first episode. But maybe, and that's a bold-and-italics-worthy maybe, the improved DVD-versions that are being released here will be more worthwhile to watch than the TV-based fansubs--I'd read reviews of MP from fansub viewers who said that the animation and story go into freefall midway through the series.
Noein and Paniponi Dash should be coming my way via pre-orders soon enough, so I'll look forward to seeing the reviews of them, even though it won't affect my buying decision. (Even though I've had the fansubs for those 2 for awhile, I haven't watched them, either due to high-level morality, or else I just never got around to watching them )
